Jockey Club Purse, Union Course, 1832.
Many contemporary authorities considered Black Maria an even better racemare than her dam, the famous Lady Lightfoot. She ran 17 times in four-mile heats. In the Jockey Club Purse, run over four-mile heats, it took five heats to decide the race; one of Black Maria's opponents reportedly died from exhaustion. Maria herself reportedly dropped 100 pounds during the ordeal but never missed a feed and ran second in another four-mile heat race eleven days later. She was considered a large mare for the time, standing 15.3 hands and weighing 900 pounds.
