The Darley Arabian, foaled around 1700, was a horse of exceptional beauty. He came from Aleppo in Syria, where the finest Arabians were believed to be bred. He was shipped to England in 1703 by the Counsel in Aleppo, Thomas Darley. He never raced. Put to stud at Aldby in East Yorkshire, he founded one of the most important male lines.
