| This is a celebrated race horse. Raced against the great Hambletonian and, though be 2nd best to him, was equal to any else of his day. His match race on Mar 25, 1799 with Hambletonian was for an astounding purse of 3000 guineas (most were 300-500gs) in a 4 mile contest, the two battled per Alydar-Affirmed through the long Newmarket stretch, with most observers thinking Diamond had won, but officially was judged that Hambletonian had surged at the wire by "the shortest of necks"
