There's a lot of impressive black type in that family, but you really need to go back to the sixth and seventh dams to appreciate it.

El Senor ran in the 1991 Arc. The only other American runner I can remember ---aside from Tom Rolfe--was Carry Back.

Any others?
Here's a link to a wonderful contemporary assessment by the keen-eyed Charles Hatton: http://ddink55.wordpress.com/
I've wished for years that someone would collect together Hatton's writings. He was a great writer and a great judge of horses.

I think there are a lot of matings of this sort from the days when people chose to use their own stallions instead of fashionable ones, e.g,, breeding Almahmoud to Cosmic Bomb. Nice idea for a thread, and of course you're right about Minnesota Mac.

I'd add Amerigo to the list of exceptionally promising sires who died very young.

Look at that 5th generation--there are only 4 imported horses listed there.

Don't forget Invasor. The weanlings that I've seen are very good-looking; he's stamping his foals as well, I think.

I remember my first sale that I attended with my dad. I very very excited by the famous names on catalog page and saw exactly what I wanted to see. "But, Dad, her third dam is Miss Grillo!"

The fact that I was 12 and didn't have any money hindered me a bit as well.

I loved hip # 288 (Dynaformer-Awe That-Boundary). He didn't look much like a Dynaformer.

You don't see Vaguely Noble very often in stallion pedigrees. And he was the most fashionable sire around the time when I was just getting started in the business.

Surely this will be the year that Forestry's fee finally starts to come down to earth.

I think More Than Ready (who I like a lot as a sire) might come down a little as well.
