Retired Racehorse Trainer Challenge

If you haven't heard of this project, it is the brainchild of Steaurt Pittman of the Maryland based Retired Racehorse Retraining Project. Five weeks to train a horse who knows nothing but the track for exhibition at the Pennsylvania Horse Expo - a challenge even for professional trainers. Here's an ...

The one thing that does work here in the PNW is expensive - Hoofgrid. We use it as part of a system starting with geotextile, drainage rock, Hoofgrid in high traffic areas, and then a 5/8 minus over the top. The upfront investment is high, but without the Hoofgrid, your gravel will get churned into ...

There are pages and pages at Chronicle of the Horse discussing Totilas' sale and speculating on whether he will continue compete or simply retire to the breeding shed. It sounds strangely like the debate about a Derby winner's future. There have been sale rumors about this horse for so long that it ...

Courageous Comet was fun to watch in the dressage warmup outside hte main arena. I lived by that warmup for most of the WEG (I was there to write about endurance and help at a breed booth for the Akhal-Teke, but also to drink in as much of the goings on as I could) Although watching the top competit...

I have seen Friesian foals that are born black, but most future blacks look like these two, one an akhal-teke, born dark brown: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33HvFHlgYVA Or, like this QH cross, the mousy brown that LB is referring to: http://blog.seattlepi.com/horsebytes/archives/135678.asp Both th...

Cheap horses in Ky are still cheap after you ship them somewhere else. They are cheap for a reason. I've seen alot of people get burned because they were told (and believed) that any horse born in Ky is automatically better than a horse born somewhere else. People see all the Ky breds running in th...

From the Wikipedia entry for Zenyatta Mondatta : Copeland has claimed that the group arrived at the album's title after deciding it should roll off the tongue. Rejected titles included Caprido Von Renislam (referring to the street ...

Interesting article. Thanks for posting it. When I was a naive young art chick working at a big Wall Street brokerage, I was flabbergasted by the fact that they would lend you money against your stock portfolio -- so you could buy more stock and pay more brokerage fees of course. This worked great i...

That's great -- is it TB only or a general horse show? The rescue I volunteer for sometimes has a show every year - it is a great way to raise money in a fun way and for a far-flung group of people who may see more of the horses than each other to work as a team. I just put a review of Beyond the Ho...

Facebook is another way to build a "constituency" -- Rerun in NJ is using this to advantage and if people network on behaf of the horses the word does get out. It does take time and energy though.
