Plummeting Foal Crops: A Possible Cause and Implications

Recently I had the time to do a little thinking about the state of racing. Since I have three well bred allowance mares that should be bred, I did some calculations on the cost of raising a foal and bringing it to the sales or to the race track. For my quick purposes, I arrived at $30K for the forme...

Notional filly

Morning: Before I answer you're question, please understand that I breed, own and train all my horses and since I got back into the business a dozen years ago I've had 100% starters and 90% MSW and/or Allowance winners. Therefore, I don't get too concerned about confirmation being perfect because I ...

If you have an iphone

A friend put me on to this app for iphones only that gives you live races and replays for many tracks. Go to "Horse Races Now". This is the best I've found.

Even among the top sires, 30% of the foals will never start, and 50% of the foals will never win a race at any level.
Many of the big trainers that these yearlings go to also have big junkyardsl

Some other considerations

Some years back I lost a G1 placed producing mare in KY through carelessness, that was insured. Even though the mare had been under continuous oversight by a top KY clinic, the insurance company tried to run on the payout. If this ever happens to you, you will find there is less than 1% of attorneys...

Right you are!

I stand corrected. Attribute the error to my nom-de-plume and the lateness of the hour.

Two Monsters Waiting in the Wings

With all the focus on the Derby hopefuls, I'd like to point out two monsters waiting their chance in the other Classics: 1) Acquired by Pletcher after his initial start, a second, this guy is a half brother to Uh Oh Bango maternally. He is also a 3/4 brother paternally to the brilliant Notional. He'...

My mare's name is Enchanting Star (see picture w/pedigree) and I designed her by using Take Charge Lady as a model. I bred her, foaled and raised her, and gave her her early training in Ocala. I knew Star was special the day she was born. When I shipped her to Delaware Park as a 2yo, her first 4 wor...

Got a whopper of a filly!!

Missed the foaling by about 10 minutes on Thursday night and when I looked in the stall door all I could see was legs.
My small, grade I runnerup mare dropped a lovely, LARGE, correct chestnut filly.
If I could figure it out, I'd post a photo that would make you rub your eyes in disbelief.

Morningside and Madelyn

Based on my inspection about noon today, my mare will foal her Notional filly within 48 hours.

Morningside: I'm curious to know more about the pedigree of the mother of your colt.

Madelyn: Can't wait to get your assessment and pictures of Notional.

Thank you.

This is a pretty savvy group. Looking at it another way, the top 60 sires from the leading sires list average about 70% starters, and about 50% winners at any level. So about a 30% never make it to a race. And these are foals that are by sires with perhaps a median $50K stud fee out of quality mares...

I sent a nice mare to Hidden Brook Farm last year for breeding. Sergio is the farm manager and he is extremely responsive. I don't have the number handy but it's easy to find with a web search.
Good luck.

Another idea

It's late and I don't have time to go on at length now, but I would strongly suggest that you look at My Pal Charlie: Indian Charlie out of a strong producing Halo mare. He's close to you and in my experience, inbreeding Hail to Reason blood is dynamite. Your mare by Take Me Out-Cure the Blues shoul...

I would suggest that you send him to Barry Eisaman at Eisaman Equine in Ocala to get him prepared for the rigors and mental challenges of racing.

In Miami, I know Bill White, and he has been a leading trainer at Calder over many years and he's a very honest and forthright guy.
Good luck.

Reenci: Pretty web savvy but couldn't find the info you indicated. Could you post a hot link?
Thanks for your help.
