Ask yourself this, would a top breeding farm be culling this mare or breeding her? And how much can you expect to sell this yearling for? I would think $5,000 would be optimistic.

Don't think you could go wrong going back to Tale of the Cat. Foal would sell well if ok physicals.

I would look at it this way. If I were trying to create a foal out of your mare that I could sell as a yearling, the main factor is to find a commercial sire in your price range. (Which is actually somewhat hard to do.) While there have been some excellent ideas on here as to pedigree and crosses, t...

I like your mare. You made a good value purchase in November. Classy family, the 4th dam is the reines-de-course Claiborne mare Homespun. Pure class, she produced the great two year old Folk Art. What are you trying to accomplish with this mare? Are you breeding to produce the best possible mating t...

Every trainer I have ever talked with says the same thing. Oh, I don't make anything off the day rates, only way I make any money is if the horse wins. Then explain this to me. Many times I have inquired to trainers about purchasing a horse they train, usually broodmares who need to be done racing a...

For all the Notre Dame fans, how about Dead Fake Girlfriend.
Seriously though, saw the movie Lincoln, and a phrase in the movie US Grant uses caught my attention. Terms of Surrender.

The key is for 5,000. When he was at 35,000, he was absurdly overpriced. With an AEI of 1.26, he is what he is. He is where he should be right now, in a state program. He should do well down there. You can get some brilliant fast sprinters by him.

One thing about Darley, is they will do foal sharing with people if you have a really nice mare. I find them to be very supportive of the industry. Hey Pete, I always enjoy your posts, any thoughts on who is an undervalued out of favor stallion right now, as in the examples with Arch and Lemon Drop ...

I have known a lot of people who try and get horses fit by jogging them in big barns, etc. Problem is when they get to a racetrack, they often freak out. Seen several fast horses ruined like this. Part of a good racehorse is the eye, and dealing with the surroundings and sounds of a mile track. Best...

Mandy Pope got her money the old fashioned way, she inherited it from her father John William Pope, who started Variety Wholesalers. She and her brother now own stores across the South like Maxway and Roses, which are like Dollar General stores. Lots and lots of China made junk adds up. Wayne Sweezy...

A horse like Tweebster lived a charm life, being in the barn of a trainer like Baffert. He got the best of care and facilities. That is horse racing, and the fragility of thoroughbreds. Could have happened in a pasture anywhere.

Nice mare you have. We had tried to claim her half sister last year for $5,000, Keiai Tokyo, who is by Medaglia dOro. She wound up selling last month at Keeneland for 20K, not in foal. Good family.

What is it about people trying to sell horses, that they never want to identify the horse? It's like playing jeapordy, guess that horse.
Like my stockbroker saying, I have a tech stock you should buy, based in the west, with a good PE ratio. Guess what it is and let me know if you want to but it.

As far as vet reports, they can be misleading, and they are really overblowing things at the sales now. But I would buy a yearling with conformation faults like offset knees, or over at the knee, or long pasterns, but with no chips or ocd's, way ahead of one that had say chips in an ankle or ocd's i...

Looking at weanlings and yearlings of new sires will help you a great deal in telling how they will perform in the sales ring, which are beauty contests. As far as determining how well they will perform on the racetrack, I find it next to meaningless. Go to Churchill Downs for a week and watch the h...
