Re: NAME THAT FOAL

About the gingham dress Dorothy wore, it's an important plot point in the book (but not the movie). Munchkins always wore blue, witches wore white. So when a stranger dressed like a Munchkin witch (blue dress, white pinafore) assassinates the tyrant in charge of their homeland via a flying house and...

Re: Vekoma

Jeff, you have a category error. Neither the heritability (or not) of Vekoma's front-end conformation nor the demonstrably true fact that Candy Ride foals are more likely to be unraced than stallions of his peer group has anything to do with either the relative quality and knowledge of US breeders v...

Re: Vekoma

There were quite a few Candy Ride sons - they were moved out quickly enough to not be memorable. I had a Sidney's Candy filly who convinced me firmly he was not a sire to be trusted. There was Misremembered, who was forgettable I suspect. I have a daughter of his who might still prove something goo...

Re: Vekoma

Joltman, Mongolian Groom ran 17 times in 2 seasons of racing and the last 13 runs were all 5 weeks apart or less. The horse was in training the entire time. Some of those runs, like the Santa Anita handicap and Charles Town Classic, were only 2 weeks apart. That kind of racing schedule does not sugg...

Re: Vekoma

The Australian hall of famed and household name horse Northerly was frequently described as having a gallop like an egg beater. He ran sound for a long storied career against the likes of Lonhro and Sublime. Didn’t slow him down any. For breeding value, I think more important than his legs, which as...

Re: Musketier and Pay the Man colt, Hiho

I must admit I was mystified to see these stallions in KY At All and I think maybe Calumet has figured out it is not a good spot for them. I was always intrigued by Snapy Halo - unfortunately the few foals I saw that were by him weren't much. Snapy Halo underlines how good intentions mean very litt...

Re: Musketier and Pay the Man colt, Hiho

Musketier was always going to be a tough fit as a flat racing stallion no matter where he stood. As a son of Acatenango, he would have had a ready market as a jumps racing stallion in Europe. As a relatively small, fast, very sound horse, he probably could have been a very good polo stallion as well...

Re: Thinking about next year....

Madelyn, for a Lord Nelson - Queen Maxine there are soooooooo many fun possibilities. Santa Helena, where Napoleon Bonaparte was imprisoned after the loss at Trafalgar Ladder Hill Road -- a road overlooking Jamestown, the capital of Santa Helena HMS Queen -- one of the ships in Nelson's squadron Tra...

Re: Thinking about next year....

Lord Nelson went through the Triple Crown qualifying meat grinder while in Baffert’s barn and he had a long rest after. Something happened in or shortly after the Malibu to lay him up another 6 months. After he was purchased by Spendthrift , he ran longer than 6f only once. That obviously worked for...

Re: Thinking about next year....

Sounds like Queen Maxine needs someone who puts out trainable dispositions as well as speed and versatility. :D Funtastic suits Queen Maxine pedigree-wise, the only question I had with him was that he's so far unproven and I tried to find stallions that had at least some progeny running so you could...

Re: Thinking about next year....

Madelyn, Did you notice that Conveyance is from the same Hipparete/Alcibiades female family as Queen Maxine? Conveyance's 4th dam Ciao is bred on the same pattern as Queen Maxine's 3rd dam Brag. If we look at the best horses in Ciao's branch of the family, the ones that jump off the page are Silent ...

Re: Thinking about next year....

Madelyn, about Include, can't hurt to ask, the worst they can say is no. About Queen Maxine, she might not be as tough to match as you think. Right away I noticed that she's doubled up on Double Jay (*sound* speed) and that her 5th dam Hipparete is a full sister to Menow, sire of Tom Fool. I also no...

Re: Thinking about next year....

Madelyn, a couple more... Include at $5000 is a very fair value for breeding a sound, money-earning racehorse. Almost 90% of his foals race and 3/4 of them win, with a median earnings of almost $40,000. Pedigree-wise he brings in more Tom Fool via Stop the Music and more Nijinsky, although I'd class...
