Re: failed sires

Speaking of Hill N Dale they also stood Zensational and Buddha who covered huge books and were pretty much total busts. They fit the model of lightly raced and had great speed. At least with Zen they realized pretty early to stop but I'm pretty sure he covered a few top class mares in his first crop...

Re: failed sires

The Minstrel was hardly a stud failure; according to The Jockey Club, he sired 58 stakes winners from 503 named foals, including champions L'Emigrant (a winner of the classic Poule d'Essai des Poulains/French Two Thousand Guineas), Minstrella, and Bakharoff as well as 1988 Kildangan Irish Oaks and ...

Re: Divine Park

That's a great site. Money Talks and while they are limited as to how much they can spend for racing age horses and broodmares (I think) they don't seem to have one for stallions. I love how they show you the mares production as well and the resulting foals. They usually have some decent pictures too.

Re: Divine Park

Average of 36 foals per crop. Poor fertility or at least he had to cover the mares multiple times. Suspect bad commercially as well. Still there. http://studbook.kra.co.kr/neweng/html/eng_hr_retrieve.jsp?mabun=036735 Returned Year Mares Covered Mares Returned Barren Mares Conceived Fertility Percent...

Re: failed sires

Saying breed to a son versus the stallion himself is very different. There were far more sons of Danzig who were failures than were successes as seemed to be the case for other Northern Dancer sons The Minstrel and Nijinsky. I can't even think of the last time I saw the Minstrel in a pedigree and I ...

Re: failed sires

Why would you include Langfuhr in that list? He has somewhere north of 78% lifetime winners from starters. He sired 95 stakes winners and if you wanted to knock him it was that he had a reputation for siring small foals and that didn't translate to good sales numbers. At age 26 he actually covered s...

NICE purses up there. Good stallion rosters as well. Good luck with the mare :D

Re: Broodmare quality based on placement of offspring

From a catalog perspective it would say "x wins/starts, etc" not where they earned their money so that wouldn't matter. You want to keep yourself in the best company and your horse in the worst. Since many first time starters are not claimed it's a good opportunity to see what you have. NY...

Re: Smoke Glacken Euthanized at 22

That horse is a slow, low level claimer. Why would you want to breed to him? Are you looking to breed to race or breed to sell?

Re: Paynter

Slew O'Gold was a ridgling too and I recall seeing some of his sons that were as well. I seem to recall there is a third stallion son of Seattle Slew's who was one as well. I don't remember if it was Capote or not. In regards to Candy Ride, I definitely saw two when I saw him out at Land's End. I al...

Re: Paynter

Not to be inappropriate, but as picky as breeders are when looking at stallions, how could they miss that? You don't even have to look that close to spot them they are usually easily visible from a few feet away. If it's on the far side then when the stallion is walking they should be visible as wel...

Re: Bred to two Studs?

Yes all covers are supposed to be reported whether the mare is in foal or not. They switched to a different stallion on the same farm (I have done that too) as sometimes the combination just doesn't work. My mare got right in foal when I switched after two covers that were not only good but she had ...
