I highly admired him as a breeder, studying pedigrees of the horses he's produced. I also loved Fast Play, Personal Ensign... and my OTTB's sire is Personal Flag. I know there's a long list of amazing horses over the years that have the family's name on them.

A very sad loss to racing. What an incredible lifetime of royally bred horses. RIP to Mr. Phipps.
On a side note - my OTTB's broodmare sire is also Personal Flag.

I have vivid memories of watching Dinny's aged grandmother intensely conferring with her trainer, a painfully stooped-over Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons. The Phipps involvement in racing and breeding has never been an empty social gesture, some vestigial remains from the Gilded Age, The family has always been genuinely committed to the sport, its traditions and its betterment, none more so than Dinny.

Oh, no way! My girl is Wild Bell. I had hoped to breed her once (how I found this forum way back when), but the hubby wasn't on board with that plan.
I'd love to look up your girl, if you wanted to share her name.
Royally-bred is a good way to put it. Boy, the pedigrees I drooled over... I know he's a larger loss to the racing industry than just being a breeder, but that's how I'll always think of him.
Like, could you cram more into a pedigree than this? http://www.pedigreequery.com/fast+play
That tail-female line is amazing.
And that's a great memory, Patuxet.

Here's his well-detailed obituary from the NY Times. It's the first I've read which gives cause of death.
