Breeders’ Cup 2017

Postby Aug27 » Sun Oct 29, 2017 6:51 pm

One week out, and no interest?!
I will (hopefully) get the discussion started.
I have been watching the works on TVG with interest, and skimmed through the advance PPs of the pre-entries.
My initial thoughts:
The Distaff ought to go through Elate and Stellar Wind.
Maybe Accelerate or Sharp Aztecs in the Dirt Mile.
Defrong will likely be a heavy favorite in the Sprint, so I might look elsewhere for a price ...

Arrogate has apparently returned to his old self, and if that is truly the case then the rest are running for second IMO.
However, if he does not like Del Mar, I expect Gun Runner or Collected to run winning races.
Your thoughts?

I am very excited about this year's races! I won't even bother with handicapping until post positions are drawn, but here are some personal favourites I'll be rooting for:

Dirt Mile - Practical Joke
Distaff - Stellar Wind, I've always liked her, this is her hometown, and she's training like she means to win.
Turf Sprint - Pure Sensation and Hogy.
F & M Sprint - Unique Bella is a monster, but I will cheer for Ami's Mesa because I like her female family.
F & M Turf - Lady Eli!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sprint - Whitmore and Ransom the Moon
Mile - Heart to Heart finally gets his G1???
Turf - Don't have a clue.
Classic - I'll be rooting for Gun Runner and Arrogate.

Juveniles I haven't really looked at, but I like the two top California horses.

Hi Cree,
Thanks for the post.
I like Practical Joke, but think he is better around one turn. The Del Mar race will be around two.
Does that concern you?

The clockers seem to love unique Bella, but her numbers look low. That is my only reservation as far as she is concerned.

I think all of his wins are around 1 turn, but he hasn't embarrassed himself.

I don't think we've seen Unique Bella's best.

I’m excited for it! :D
Busy week, I’m behind the 8-ball...

Definitely Lady Eli! I could be wrong, but I think the BC will go to the ladies this year.
Unless Arrogate kills it... but I’m rooting for Gun Runner, too. :D

Sound like Elate had a very good work.

Del Mar track is deep they are saying, so deep they can't hear them coming down the track...

Hi Aug27,
The pre-entries have been out a while, but in most cases some of the entries are cross entered as to preference and 2nd preference in other races. This morning the official entries will be drawn for the Friday and Saturday BC races and the pp's will then be published. Once the overnights come out, I will post the entries and past performances for all the Friday and Saturday BC races in the handicapping section. Since it's west coast time I doubt we will see the official entries before 5-7 PM eastern....so it's possible there will be a delay in posting entries and pp's, but certainly by tonight or tomorrow at the latest. Hope to see everyone's selections after burning the midnight oil dissecting the pp's:>) Good Luck! TJ

Thank you, TJ. I really appreciate all you do on here!
(I hope I did not offend you, or "step on your toes", with my initial post.)

Hi Aug27,
No offense taken....this is open to all and the more that contribute the better it will be. Though it does seem the site's been slow lately....so lets see if we can get it moving:>) TJ

Somehow, Gary Mandella convinced Mike Smith to ride Birdie Gold (30-1) in the Filly & Mare Turf. Three year old with a record of 4-1-0 in five races. Showed a nice closing kick winning the Grade 1 Classico Pamplona to qualify for the BC. See #5 below. Mike knows how to close. Might want to use Birdie Gold underneath in your exotics.

In the middle of the night I watched the BC races, what a fantastic program!
The more I get to know people, the more I love animals.
