Echo Eight
Diabolical x Soulful (Lion Heart)

Echo Eight had his first start at Ruidoso Downs on 7/15/16, in a futurity trial for the $175,000 Mountain Top Futurity. (We sold him last year, so are only connected to him as his breeders, but we do still own--and are not planning to sell--his yearling half-sister.)

Echo was the only first time starter in a field of six, including two stakes winners and a maiden special weight winner. The little fireball held his own, breaking first, getting first call, and matching strides with the Sunland Copper Top Futurity winner (Ignored) going into the turn and even giving a valiant effort to regain the lead after Ignored pulled in front. He remained in second place until the final furlong when he tired, and the maiden special weight winner (Toll Free) and the other stakes winner (El Tule) overtook him. He finished fourth.

All things considered (first out, stakes company, muddy track) we're really proud of his effort.

Thanks, Madelyn.

Some of you may remember we closed down our breeding operation around 2007, then restarted it again in 2012 after receiving some New Mexico breeders' incentives from winning horses we'd bred.

We acquired two pretty nice mares for our regional program--a multi-winning daughter of Lion Heart out of a stakes-producing daughter of Seattle Slew (Echo's dam), and a multi-stakes placed full sister to Euro Empire (a multi stakes winner, 2x G1 stakes placed). We bred both to Diabolical who was ranked as the leading freshman sire in the nation at one point.

This is our first baby to hit the track in years.

Echo Eight ran fourth in his first race at Ruidoso.

He has since been moved to Zia Park and will start in a $25K Maiden Special Weight for New Mexico Bred 2YOs tomorrow, Monday, 9/12/16.

Thanks so much, Madelyn.

We're not expecting much because this is only his second race and he has the outside post. He did show a pretty quick turn of foot coming out of the gate on his first start though, so maybe he'll have a shot.

As long as he has a safe trip, we'll be happy.

Here are his "baby pics" from Foal Watch 12 hours after he was foaled:

Well, that was a freakin' disaster. He ducked out, got lost in the pack and totally ran out of gas. It looks like he's okay though.

Ugh. So frustrating. But the most important thing is that he came back ok. Onward and upward!

Thanks, Toccet. And good luck to you! This business can really be School of Hard Knocks.

We actually left the business once after having a disastrous first two crops--only one survivor out of seven, a Devon Lane (Storm Cat) x Southern Halo. (They were in the care of a breeding farm, but I'm not even going to go there.) That filly didn't run a lick. We later sold everything, but were still the breeders of two who went on to earn us some nice breeders incentives three years later, one a full brother to the filly that didn't run.

So we got back in on a limited basis, this time with only two carefully chosen mares. There's a lot riding on how these two colts do. If it doesn't pan out this time, we may get out of breeding and go the partnership route. I think there's probably a lot less heartache involved. But I would miss working with the babies.

Take heart he is just a Baby!! In my personal experience it takes a lot of perseverance and downright stubborness to stick in the horse and/or racing business these days.
