This is a very large filly (measures 48 inches or 122 cm) and it is likely that the delivery, or prolonged malposition contributed to swelling of a lumbar nerve root, ultimately impeding proprioception of her rear legs. The most difficult aspect of this experience was deciding how far to go with medical intervention. It was unclear to the vets, what was wrong and they could not determine whether the prognosis was poor or good. It is a tough call. I believe we would have continued IV fluids, antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medication and so on, to give her every chance at life. I am thankful that it happened sooner, than later, and that she had a peaceful demise. I would have regretted taking extraordinary measures if it only served to prolong her suffering.
I hope to never feel this helpless again.
Thanks again to all of you for your kind words and support.
