The GR II Rebel Stakes

Postby TJ » Wed Mar 14, 2018 1:47 pm

Very nice field goes post-ward for this 1 1/16th mile Derby prep worth 50-20-10-5 across the board. Solomini, one of three Baffert is pointing to the Derby is a solid contender making his 3YO debut. Pletcher has an unbeaten 3YO Magnum Moon, looking to earn his first Derby points...lots of talk about this one having real ability. But he, like Justify is bucking a late start and the curse of Apollo...both have identical records to date with a maiden and allowance race victory to their credit. He's not nearly as impressive as Justify, but he is worth watching. Below find the entries and the pp's. TJ

Hi ct,
I agree with you...I picked High North to win the Risen Star and was turned off after he got beat. I respect the work his trainer does and now the switch to Gary Stevens....guess I was a bit too harsh on him when evaluating this race...but no doubt he probably needed his last and should move forward. Will have to find a way to work him into the mix...thanks. TJ

Hi Cree,
I heard good things about the winner...yet still wouldn't go for it. I was surprised how small Solomini is...doesn't look like he transitioned well from 2-3. Anyway...another horse in the exact mold as Justify. Now Justify has to catch up to Magnum Moon and win his stake next out. Might have two of the best trainers trying to break the curse of Apollo this year:>) TJ

I was mighty impressed by Magnum Moon, only his 3rd start! He looks like there is more in the tank and finished really strong.
Solomini IS small. He tried hard, but unless he needed a race, I don’t think he’s quite at the level of Bolt, McKinzie, and Magnum Moon.
I like Combatant’s steady stream of placings, if he makes the Derby I’m putting him in my superfecta.
