The circumstances are quite friendly for a gray Thoroughbred to win the 2011 Epsom Derby. First the last gray to win the Epsom Derby was Airborne in 1946. Second, note that there are several gray aspirants and that a gray is not the favorite to win it. That’s even better statistically speaking! Whenever this happens there is a good chance that a gray will win.

This year’s Epsom Derby has several grays:

Vadamar (FR) (gray colt 2008) http://www.pedigreequery.com/vadamar

Ocean War (GB) (gray colt 2008) http://www.pedigreequery.com/ocean+war2

Native Khan (FR) (gray colt 2008) http://www.pedigreequery.com/native+khan

Did not happen in the Epson Derby, but the French Derby was won by a gray son of Dalakhani, the third one also a gray by the same sire.

This year (2011) Italian and French Derbies were won by two gray colts

CRACKERJACK KING (gray colt 2008) http://www.pedigreequery.com/crackerjack+king2 (Italian Derby)

RELIABLE MAN (gray colt 2008) http://www.pedigreequery.com/reliable+man
(French Derby)

not to mention the Guineas!

Note that 4 grays ran in the French Derby and only the third place finisher was considered a heavy favorite, which means that whenever a good number of grays are included in a program, there is a very good chance of a gray winning the event regardless of the racing merits in favor of these grays. The winner is undefeated but anyway was considered a very green horse.

Hello,
I have noted a gray filly will start the "Diana Trial" (2000 meter), Group 2 at Hoppegarten (Berlin). Her name is Alkhana by Dalakhani - A beautiful mind by Winged Love.

Regards, Bettina
