Tom Atchison dam

Postby steward » Fri Dec 31, 2010 1:30 pm

Is Tom Atchison's (1867) dam Mary G. or Mary Longstreet? I have run across so many references to TA's damsire being Ashland that I have lost count.

On May 27, 1870, Thomas Atchison purchased "Pelham", who he subsequently re-named "Tom Atchison."

Renamed link:

"Pelham" had raced a few days earlier in his maiden outing, where his pedigree was listed as "g. c. Norfolk, dam Mary L. out of Lola Montes (sic) by Ashland." ("Mary L. = Mary Longstreet??)

There are various later resources which gave the same pedigree, one offered here:

I've seen the Stud Book entry, but my confidence level in it is shaky for the reasons cited. Any other definitive evidence?

There is additional evidence but I'm not sure I'd call it "definitive".

"Tom Atchison" appears (by that name) under Mary G. ASB 2:48 and 3:225. Both records give Mary G.'s breeder as Jas. Moore and owner as Thos. Atchison. Her produce record 3:225 includes a bay full sister to TA foaled in 1868, and an undated half sister, Black Maria x Belmont. Mary G. is entered nd nc under Lola Montez ASB 1:666, where Lola is shown as bred in KY, owned by Jas. Moore, Yolo cty., CA. Mary Longstreet is not shown among Lola's produce. There are no additional produce records in any subsequent vol. of the ASB for Lola Montez.

Black Maria and "Norfolk Mare (sister to Tom Atchison)" have produce records in ASB 4(110,396). Both are shown as bred by Atchison. Black Maria was then owned by C. Underhill, CA; the Norfolk mare by Jas. Douglas, CA.

Mary Longstreet by Ashland is unknown until the delayed produce rcd. (ASB 5:744) of her 1868 b f Yolone x Norfolk, shown as bred by Atchison and then owned by Mrs. S.B. Wolfskill, Santa Monica, CA. Bruce notes there that Mary should be added to the produce of Lola Montez.

Other than Mary G. and Mary Longstreet the produce of Lola Montez are fully described by year and coat color by Bruce. Mary G.'s rcd. notwithstanding, I doubt that either was bred by Moore. Atchison doesn't appear to have been reporting to Bruce, but clearly he owned both at the time Tom Atchison was foaled. In regard to evidence for the identity of his dam, the record of the Norfolk mare is persuasive that he should remain under Mary G. at the moment. But the contradictory rcds. merit inclusion in the remarks section of his entry in the db. There are some more obscure references that I still have to check. Will let you know if anything more definitive turns up.

While on the subject of older CA pedigrees....

This newspaper article gives the heritage of a top 1870s racer first called "Thornhill", then "St. John", and then back to "Thornhill." Sallie Cann by Belmont is the dam, but she is not in the database. (In the few other articles about Thornhill, they only mention "dam by Belmont.")
