Dr. Howard

Postby vineyridge » Tue Apr 05, 2011 4:30 pm

There was a Remount stallion named Dr. Howard. There is one 1918 TB with that name on PQ, but there are two on Allbreed. The one that isn't in PQ is by The Porter out of Janet Blair and has a note that he carried the large heart.
There is no foaling date for him, but he must have been post 1923 if his dam was the 1921 Janet Blair.

Equineline has neither.

The 1918 Dr. Howard is shown on Allbreed with QH descendants; the other one has an Appaloosa and a QH

I've a lurking interest in cavalry TBs and Remount stallions. Is there any way to figure who the Dr. Howard that the cavalry used was?

It was the 1918 Dr. Howard, ch c x Handsel - Grace Navarre x Henry of Navarre. The only evidence for him in the stud is in the HBSBs. Three registered HBs are attributed to him, two owned by William Anson, one owned by J. Keeling, San Angelo. All three were foaled before either of Janet Blair's colts x The Porter, neither of which was ever called Dr. Howard. That entry in the abdb is in error.

You might want to do a search on the all breed research forum on Dr Howard. Pedigree researcher Pat, has lots to say about the subject. Her conclusion is that there was no such critter.

He shows up here in as the TB sire of Mansfields Comanche

You might also want to search on Mansfields Comanche.

Pat really knows her stuff.

Pat's never disputed the validity of Dr. Howard 1918 x Handsel - Grace Navarre x Henry of Navarre, owned by the U.S. Remount Svc. In fact, I think she sent the ApHC a copy of ASB 13, p. 243 showing him entered under his dam. They (the ApHC) are the source for the pedigree of Dr. Howard as x The Porter - Janet Blair, and continue to stand behind it even though it's obviously wrong.

Sorry, should have specified the Mansfields Comanche version of Dr Howard.

I'm not sure if your interest extends to their racing record, but here is one DRF mention for the colt in question. BTW, his first race represented by the code "47630" is for May 28, 1920 (if I've done my math right).
