Old Stallions

Postby follygirl » Fri Feb 11, 2005 1:56 pm

Any thoughts on the idea that stallions lose their ability to sire good horses as they age? I have occasionally read about this and heard people dismiss potential sires on account of age.

Along a similar vein, do you think there is a dilutional effect on quality if a horse is bred to a large number of mares each season, or breeds in both hemispheres?

Thanks..I am a new reader and enjoy the message board a great deal!

From what I understand, aging has no effect on sperm quality.

There's a long thread on this subject under the heading "Stallions." Go to the second page. The thread is titled "The breeding world has gone mad."
