Oh Barcaldine, I'm jealous!

It's funny, I was just speaking of Lure the other week with a pal on FB. What a fantastic horse when he was 'on'.

I remember hin and Star of Cozzene at Atlantic City, had a horse in that day so watched them both in the paddock and racing....Classy horses
The sport and industry survive not only because of the champions that are remembered forever but also because of the losers that are so easy to forget...

The only son of Lure to stand in the U. S., AROUSE (out of Buena Noche, by Quiet American), stands at Apache Farm in Rembert, SC.

Some nice photos - see link:

Geez, Lure was bouncing off the rail and running pretty greenly in the stretch.
Both ran their eyeballs out there, and went on to race past their 3-year-old seasons after a battle like that, some of our sophomores now wouldn't have made it past May.

Even though his fertility greatly impacted his stud career, LURE can not be considered a successful stallion with the relatively few runners he had. In spite of receiving the best books ever bred by a young stallion he managed to sire only one good racehorse, ORPEN. None of his get showed the same sheer speed and precocity.

LURE may have been the first stallion to call my attention to ALYDAR's poor record as a broodmare sire of stallions. I was fortunate to see ALYDAR in the flesh, in his stall at Calumet. I cant think of a more impressive physical specimen. Yet, in spite of his tremendous success as a broodmare sire, painfully few stallions out of his daughters have fired at stud. LURE is among these.

When I worked for the Daily Racing Form I did a story on Lure's dam, Endear. She was struck by lightning in her paddock at Claiborne when Lure was a yearling; she had a suckling by Devil's Bag (later named Devil Begone) at her side.

Seems like LURE/ORPEN's tail-male-lineage
can be preserved via some of these
good runners. Perhaps there are some
other names that can be mentioned:

JAKOR (ITY)
ORPEN SHADOW (IRE)
INVINCIBLE SON (IRE)

When the manager told me he was in a paddock not 50 yards from where we were standing I went into fan mode and asked if I could see him. He was happy to show me, while warning not to get too close to him when he came to the fence.

At 23 years old he looked half his age. And acted like it, too. Kinda like me.

There is hope for LURE via ORPEN!
