All his races were on dirt but he has turf ancestry.

His offspring's turf races look a lot like the dirt races at 2 except fewer of them. Euros take the winter off. Five Invasors raced in Europe on turf at 2: Rawaafed (2,0,0,1), Invasor Girl (2,0,0,0), Inquadh (2,0,0,0), Bodembender (5,0,1,1) & Golf Juan (3,0,0,1). Invasor's first American winner was Wonder of it All at 2 on turf (2,1,0,0) - they bred her at 2 so she's done.

Clh: your story is looking golden. You said there were few races at Beulah for Vader - does he like turf?

Azure Hills broke out at the start. Then she was last out of the gate, raced 3 wide, and finished 8th of 11, 13 3/4 lengths behind the winner. Better luck next time, kid.

Brigitte; Vader's first race was on the turf and he came in 2nd so I think he'll like it (perhaps at a longer distance this time) and Ivan is wanting to run in another turf race again in the near future, so we'll see. Perhaps his next outing will be on the turf.

Invasor's 9th winner

Postby Brigitte » Wed Mar 14, 2012 6:11 pm

Thanks for the Expression article! She was scratched from the Limit stakes, though, not specified by whom or why. Looking forward to her next try at a mile.

The hero of the day was Five Sixteen. In a repeat of his last MSW at 1 1/8 he faced an overwhelming favorite, Suns Out Guns Out at 0.45 who ran in the Gotham as a maiden. (He was 10th after getting bumped at the start.) This time it was Five Sixteen who won by a head. He came out between horses and out dueled the favorite to be the best, and won $39,000. (An objection by the jockey of the 3d place finisher was denied.)

He's running against good competition and now he's a winner at 1 1/8. I bet there'll be more Belmont talk.

Fortin makes his debut on march 17 in a one mile MSW at Gulfstream for a purse of $63,350.

Fortin, love that name! Midnight Vader is the most creative name but Fortin has punch, may he live up to it!

Princess Kiha has new connections. She is running March 18 at Turf Paradise in a $6250 claimer for a purse of $7000 at 7.5 f on turf.

http://www.equibase.com/static/entry/TUP031812USA-EQB.html#RACE1

I can't think of a good spin on dropping so far down in class. She won by 8 threw a clunker, then came in 4th and her connections quit? After looking at a lot of races by Invasors, there's a pattern. Several that ran fast early and faded seemed to get a second wind if not pushed or encouraged early but instead pushed to continue when they'd usually fade. We've seen it with Five Sixteen, Photon, and Gagne, to name a few. Kiha already "knows" not to flame out early. Wish they had tried her at longer so she could be in cruise mode longer and when the others slow (more than in a mile race) she'd have a closing kick. A mile is not a route race. Kiha is probably a router but may be stuck as a low level miler.

Here's another rant by someone with much more experience:

"Here's what I've observed over 40 years. Breeding took a sharp turn from old school, distance and balance breeding to trying to create a fast 2/3yr old, in hopes of catching the late bloomer at a disadvantage in the Derby. Now we have two distinct breeds within the thoroughbreds. Both require vastly different approaches to their training strategies. Most of todays modern trainers are unaware of this and tend to train late bloomers like 2 yr. olds. This is further eroding the the breed as it makes the more proper bred horse appear to be of less value when in fact, the patience needed to develop a late bloomer is ignored. I've been testing this theory by picking late bloomers for claim. I'm finding that many horses bred to get 1 1/8 mi+ are being sprinted as if the trainer has no idea as to what they're training. Over a period of 16 months, I've picked out 10 horses for $132,000. Even as these horses sometimes get mismanaged or the trainer stumbles on near the proper distance, they have earned over $470,000 to date. Because the trainers test doesn't touch on wether the trainer knows what kind of horse he has and the different training methods each requires, the breed keeps leaning towards more speed while the old school breed falls through the cracks. When I see a stallion like a Dynaformer bred to a speed mare, like say an In Excess mare, it drives me crazy. I'm watching the breed head in the wrong direction before my eyes."

I talked with Kent Barnes from Shadwell and they were really looking forward to Expression's stakes debut. Guess they'll have to wait for Invasor's first stake's winner a little bit longer. We had an interesting conversation about what distance we thought his get would get. He said he was surprised Vader won at that 6f race as well. Hopefully folks will take their time and send stretch these horses out for the longer distances, they will come around soon enough. Invasor did his best at 3, 4 and 5.

It would be great if all the Invasors get what you're giving Vader: the chance to develop fully.

First mention of an Invasor on the TC Countdown

Postby Brigitte » Fri Mar 16, 2012 6:40 pm

First Photon: his turf race stayed on turf so he worked 6f instead. Now he's ready to take on $50,000 claimers in a 1 1/16 race if they dare set a hoof on the dirt instead of the turf on March 21.

http://www.equibase.com/static/entry/GP032112USA-EQB.html#RACE9

Five Sixteen was mentioned in the Countdown to the Crown as a possible "fringe player" in the Wood Memorial. I suppose Schettino might run him on the off chance since he's improving and gets the distance (his winning 1 1/8 race was faster than the race he lost to Raconteur). But he hasn't run a really fast race yet and the top contenders have. So he's not getting much respect:

"The G1 Wood Memorial might have picked up a fringe player / filler Wednesday at Aqueduct when FIVE SIXTEEN (Dominick Schettino) outlasted heavily favored SUNS OUT GUNS OUT (Dale Romans) in a slowly run 1-1/8 miles maiden route. The win flattered the form of FIVE SIXTEEN’s conqueror Feb. 11, STREET LIFE (Chad Brown), who returns this Saturday in stakes company. Third in this Wednesday tilt was the Street Cry-Ashado colt STEELE ROAD (Kiaran McLaughlin), now 0-for-4 lifetime."

Well, any publicity is good publicity and Five Sixteen will get more dangerous with time.

Fortin made an excellent debut. He was second by 1/2 after being steadied just after the start and he was gaining on the winner at the finish. He finished 9 3/4 lengths ahead of the 3d place horse. He banked $9,786.

I'd call him an unlucky second - look forward to seeing him again!

Gagne returns on March 21 in a one mile msw at laurel. The purse is $33,000. She must have come out of her last well to be back in 2 weeks. Here's to her new racing style!

http://www.equibase.com/static/entry/LRL032112USA-EQB.html#RACE4

Holy Invader runs in a starter allowance at a mile on 3/20 at Parx for a purse of 30,000. Hopes are up after he aired by 13 last time out.

http://www.equibase.com/static/entry/PRX032012USA-EQB.html#RACE6

Photon is double entered, as an MTO in the March 21 $50,000 claimer on turf and also in a starter allowance March 22 one mile on dirt for a purse of $36,925. One way or the other he'll race at a higher level than before Dutrow claimed him..

More thoughts on Five Sixteen: last time he "bulled his way between rivals" to take the lead and stay in front - nothing like his behavior in his first try at 1 1/8. He's developed. It looks different than the development of a horse who romps at shorter distances then stretches out, but the end result is the same: a contender.

Princess Kiha won for the second time today. Her turf race was run at a mile on a muddy (sealed) track (another Invasor that likes off tracks). Her new owner/trainer got her prize money $4340 plus $6259, the ridiculous claiming price he put her in for. Steve Koler will train Kiha for new owner J M Zaborac.

Invasor Girl is running March 21 at Le Croise Laroche. The comments on her last race at 8f just showed up: moved quickly into the first flight, gave way at the top of the stretch. So her trainer is running her at 5.5f this time. She was 2nd at 7f on synthetic in her first race which doesn't show up on the list.
