Southern Image

Came to my attention because of Smokey Image. Thought he had an interesting pedigree, only one line to Northern Dancer, no Mr. P.

He seems pretty cheap. Any thoughts on him in general?

Great racehorse. Won some big ones including the Santa Anita Handicap. Won 6 of 8 races and was never out of the money.

I liked one of his sons, Calibrachoa, who is at stud now. I don't think that he really got the best mares to breed with, and with better mares, he might have really done something as a stallion. Probably a bargain at $4,000.

I went back and read what people had said earlier in his stud career. He started out at Taylor Made for $15,000. Sounded like he wasn't producing the most beautiful and well put together offspring - no surprise coming from that sire line, and he is a big, coarse horse. Also, they are slow developers...BUT... he can get a good one, as evidenced by Smokey Image, Winning Image, and the aforementioned Calibrachoa. Also sounds like he has had some success in Australia.
$2,500 with the right mare sounds like a steal.

Yes he had a couple of big ones in Australia. Maybe he'll get a few mares because of Smokey Image. Hard to go wrong at $2500.

$1500.00 fee this year (2017). Might drag a mare down there myself.
