You say your goal is breeding a NY Bred to race....knowing that 8 of 9 unproven stallions disappoint/fail, I would recommend using a proven sire of winners.
A difference of opinion is what makes horse racing and missionaries.

You can find in-foal mares with good racing pedigrees that are less expensive than a year of mare care + mare purchase price + stud fee at some of the sales, or privately.
