Classic winning stallions who have sired classic winners

Postby mehile » Tue Feb 27, 2018 1:26 pm

How many classic winning stallions who are still standing have produced classic winning sons?

Birdstone
Curlin

I was discussing Birdstone with a friend, and how it's a small group of classic winners who actually go on to produce a classic winner, but surely the list isn't that short, who am I missing?

Grindstone might still be standing in Oregon (he is listed in the Bloodhorse register as standing at Oakhurst Thoroughbreds). He's the sire of Birdstone, and he won the Kentucky Derby in 1996, so if he is still standing he'd be pretty old. He's not listed on the Oakhurst site, though.

I don't think Bodemeister won a classic. I think I saw a recent article indicating that Grindstone had retired from stud duty but he is still alive.

You're right Altanbarr, that's what I get for trusting my memory. He got seconds but didn't win.

Is a shame Mine that bird was a gelding and Summer Bird died so young. They were 3rd generation classic winners, it would have been interesting to see if they could have produced a 4th.

Summer Bird sired some nice horses in his short stud career. It really is a shame he died so young.

I just love anything coming down that Fappiano sire pipeline. The inbreeding to Storm Bird with Ruby Slippers in the ff (Tapit). That's a winning pedigree

Here's an article about Oakhurst in the Paulick Report. Grindstone is still there but fertility is declining so he is not commercially available this year.

Well how about classic contenders? Pioneerof The Nile 2nd KY Derby had American Pharoah. Aren't there some like that out there?
