Sugar Draz: dam:Carter's Magic & sire:Smile - any infor

Postby Tyler » Fri Jul 08, 2005 3:16 pm

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had any information on my horse's pedigree. I had his tattoo researched (V01855) and it turns out his name is Sugar Draz, his dam is Carter's Magic and sire is Smile. I put his name into the database.

I got his pedigree & race history but do not know enough about the the industry. Does anyone know any information about his sire & dam? Or point me in the direction to decipher his track record, etc.

Even though I have been riding for 30+ years, this is the first time I have had a thoroughbred. He is the most wonderful. lovable beast!

Thank you,
Caryl

Maybe this will help, here is how he is listed in the American Produce Record....

OBSFEB 1994 143 $27,000 $37,625 2yo ( 3/ 4) $20,000

because he is the first horse in the list he was his dam's first foal. He raced for two years, with 11 starts, 2 wins, 1 second and no thirds for a total earnings of $13,595. His highest speed rating was 84. He ran in 7 sprints (6-7 furlongs) and won one, and 4 routes (a mile or over) with a win and a 2nd. He started twice on a muddy track and did poorly (spr=64) In 1993 he was sold at auction (I believe at the California sale) as a yearling, and brought $13,500 against a published stud fee of $20,000, and a year later, he was sold at the Ocala Breeders Sale as a 2yo for $27,000. There have been no notable runners from his dam.

Now we go to his second dam, What Majesty:

I just answered same query in 'research requests' & was wondering the same thing - I think they're officially quarter sibs, but genetically 3/4 sibs. The Affirmed & Dr. Fager S. that What A Cooker won - aren't those part of the Florida Stallion series for 2yo's? Smile won both of them too, + the In Reality S.

A side note about his dam's sire, SMILE.

SMILE was a champion sprinter of his day and brought a beautiful, elegant and imposing physique and strong genetic package to the breeding shed along with his Millionaire earnings and performance history when he retired from racing.

He stood in Texas where he ultimately died and was highly sought after in his first season here (I believe that he may have begun his career in either Florida or Kentucky). Unfortunately either during that initial breeding season in Texas or the next, SMILE developed ailments that could not easily be diagnosed at that time. Turns out he was one of the most famous and potentially valuable of the many Thoroughbreds/horses of the time to contract the amoebic discease that is dependant upon a two stage host life cycle to mature, one of those hosts being a possum (or other ground scavenging creature such as raccoons?) and the other birds. The 'vector' for this particular discease - in other words the animal delivering the potent form to it's victims is an insect. It takes a mosquito to transmitt the 'right' life form stage of the amoeba - which is only in the birds' bloodstream as a result of the mosquito transmitting it's predecessor form from the possum/raccoon - to the horse's whence it develops into a debilitating parasite, migrating to and greatly affecting the spinal column. Because it attacks the spinal column many other physical aspects of the horse are also affected and the results are severre. Ataxia in the extreme, lack of appetite and loss of muscle - actual shriveling of the muscle - are some of the symptoms of the afflicted horses. Often it was the young Thoroughbreds that were getting sick and it was thought they had 'wobblers syndrome' but was soon recognized that a different agent was at work in these horses. In the early recognition of there being a 'new discease' affecting horses most died or were humanely euthanized due to the degree of disability they experienced. There is a treatment now for this discease - MARQUIS is the brand name of one such treatment I believe - and today some victims, if detected and treated quickly - actually return to racing at their former levels or go on to have useful lives at stud or for pleasure. IN other words there is no vaccine, cure but effective treatment. I believe I saw just recently where a new study has shown horses can acquire the infectious parasite in the dangerous life form from mosquitos that have acquired it from other mosquitos - i.e. without biting an infected bird - which makes the ability of this parasite to reach more victims quite a bit more profound.

Poor SMILE was a victim before/about the time it was beginning to be understood what was causing the symptoms and before it was understood how a horse contracted it. His champion spirit and the dedication of his owners and the Texas A&M Veterinary staff allowed him to recover - at least somewhat and I believe he may have been one of the original 'guinea pigs' for today's treatment protocols that have 'saved' many a horse. At one point he was doing so poorly that the rumor he had died was widespread. However SMILE fought back and under the care of the A&M folks and a good bit of time he recovered. His recovery, sufficient to return to stud duty was nothing short of a miracle. He returned to stallion duties but at greatly reduced books in part because his strength and overall health was being managed carefully and in part because many thought he had died or was infertile and other attractive stallion prospects were then flooding into Texas for breeder's consideration. Sadly SMILE developed some further health issues after just one or two seasons back at stud, just as interest in him as a stallion was again picking up and he was humanely destroyed. I do not know if his death was a result of a recurrence of his original ailment or of other ailments setting in after being weakened by it.

HE was one beautifully put together horse in the flesh and had the fighting instinct of a champion. When you were around him he exuded that supreme confidence and vitality that only a horse of this calibre is capable of. He is proving to be a decent broodmare sire as well.

Thanks for the Smile info... I have a Smile daughter so I found your post very interesting. Is there a good picture of Smile somewhere? My mare really stamps her offspring and I wonder if it comes from him...

EPM?

Postby mary syers » Tue Jul 26, 2005 12:20 pm

Jellac,
Are you talking about EPM? Where did you read that this was transmitted by moquitos? Mary Syers

P.S.
New treatment for EPM in FDA/UDSA pipeline on the fast track. Diclazurol(sp). Used in humans for maleria, it appears to work well on equine protezoal diseases.

Hi Madelyn,

What a Cooker and Carter's Magic are 1/2 siblings. Beyond the same dam, they share My Dear Girl and Bold Ruler in the 4th and 5th gens, but that doesn't change their relationship.

Having the same dam gives them 50% common blood. My Dear Girl, Bold Ruler and the common crosses further back in the pedigree (like an extra return of War Relic on both sides) does increase the common blood pergcentage, but it dosn't change the relationship.
