True Thoroughbred

Postby Taff » Fri Jan 13, 2012 8:52 am

There's a horse here in the U.K. called 'Bert the Alert' a friend of mine contacted Equineline asking why it's not registered, they replied saying it's not a true TB, I could take a stab at why not, but better to be thought a fool etc.
So I thought I''d ask you guys.
Thanks in Advance.

He is a registered non-thoroughbred, but not in the general stud book. There are rules for entry into both registers.

To get into the General Stud Book, and thus be considered a Thoroughbred, you need to have at least 8 generations of registered thoroughbred breeding and have shown that the family can compete against other thoroughbreds. If you look at his 5th dam, you will see that she is out of a mare by Flamenco of unknown origins. This disqualifies him from General Stud Book inclusion at this time. There are a lot of non-thoroughbreds running around in thoroughbred races, mainly hurdles and jumps in Europe.

brogers, please don't call them Thoroughbred races. In Ireland, the UK and France, it's just racing and open to all comers--more or less. Not sure about racing in the rest of the world.

IMO our racing should be open as well. Think of the huge number of US horses who were allowed to race in Europe even though they were considered Non-TB, thanks to their ancestry back before and in the time of the Jersey Act.

Bert the Alert's 6th dam, a foal of 1949, is out of a non-Thoroughbred mare.

I know that; I was using Bert the Alert as an example. I could not find a horse that I could be certain was the same Kangaroo Court. Do you have the name of the sire or the year foaled?

The name of the sire was 'Lahib'

On the Sport Horse Breed database, they have a notation that Hackler's Girl (1905) is said by Weatherby's to be out of an unknown dam; but then SHBDB go on and list a pure TB lineage for her, including tail female. Since they allow user generated pedigrees, it's hard to figure out how they figured out that the dam of Hackler's Girl was Girl Graduate, but that's who they have on their pedigree. That's also the pedigree in the PQ database.
