St. Simon

Postby Elles » Thu Oct 16, 2014 1:11 am

My horse who was born in 2012 has St. Simon around 1,000 times in his pedigree. Is this a normal number?

When i researched SS, i found the total crosses of SS were between, 130--190 in a 5 generation pedigree. Thats the norm.

I might be making a mistake. If I look at the 32 ancestors (they were born in the 50's, 60's and 70's) of my horse in his 5th generation on average they have St. Simon about 30 times in their pedigrees.

For example Top Ville. http://www.sporthorse-data.com/d?i=5387 ... =&z=7EfSHH
He was born in 1976 and we find St. Simon twice in his 7th generation, four times in his 8th generation, 19 times in his 9th generation, 40 times in his 10th generation, nine times in his 11th generation and 4 times in his 12th generation. This gives a total percentage of 11.3 %.

For example Northern Dancer. http://www.sporthorse-data.com/d?i=7425 ... =10&quota=
He was born in 1961 and we find St. Simon three times in his 6th generation, four times in his 7th generation, eight times in his 8th generation, eight times in his 9th generation, five times in his 10th generation and four times in his 11th generation. This gives a total percentage of 13.2 %.

For example Hyperion (who can once be found in Top Ville and also once in Northern Dancer). http://www.sporthorse-data.com/d?i=1494 ... =10&quota=
He was born in 1930 and we find St. Simon once in his 3rd generation and once in his 4th generation. This gives a total percentage of 18.8 %.

Of course there are also quite a number of horses born in for example the 60’s who have around 7.5 % St. Simon “blood” like for example Habitat (23 times St. Simon):

After some more researching:
http://www.sporthorse-data.com/d?i=5291 ... =10&quota=
Eyewash, born in 1946, 8 times St. Simon for a percentage of 21.1 %.

http://www.sporthorse-data.com/d?i=4835 ... =10&quota=
Admiral Drake, born in 1931, 2 times St. Simon for a percentage of 15.6 %.

http://www.sporthorse-data.com/d?i=7464 ... =10&quota=
Nearco, born in 1935, 4 times St. Simon for a percentage of 18.8 %

http://www.sporthorse-data.com/d?i=7395 ... =10&quota=
Dante, born in 1942, 7 times St. Simon for a percentage of 15.6 %

http://www.sporthorse-data.com/d?i=8896 ... =10&quota=
Djebel, born in 1937, 3 times St. Simon for a percentage of 5.5 %

http://www.sporthorse-data.com/d?i=7346 ... =10&quota=
Free Flowing, born in 1958, 11 times St. Simon for a percentage of 7.4 %

http://www.sporthorse-data.com/d?i=6739 ... =10&quota=
Raise You, born in 1946, 3 times St. Simon for a percentage of 3.9 %

http://www.sporthorse-data.com/d?i=2773 ... =10&quota=
Forli, born in 1963, 13 times St. Simon for a percentage of 11.7 %

http://www.sporthorse-data.com/d?i=1002 ... =10&quota=
Fenny Rough, born in 1980, 89 times St. Simon for a percentage of 10.6 %

http://www.sporthorse-data.com/d?i=4176 ... =10&quota=
Lyphard, born in 1969, 41 times St. Simon for a percentage of 11.3 %

My two year old has Nearco 22 times in his pedigree, one time in the 4th generation, six times in the 8th generation, ten times in the 9th generation, four times in the 10th generation and one time in the 11th generation. Nearco gives a percentage of 6.3 % of my horse's total pedigree and he brings in 22 x 4 = 88 times St. Simon.

My two year old twice has Ahonoora in the 4th generation for a total of 12.5 % of the total pedigree. Ahonoora has St. Simon 59 times, so he brings in 2 X 59 = 118 times St. Simon. The total percentage of St. Simon in the pedigree of Ahonoora is 9.4 %.

In my two year old St. Simon can be found in his 10th to 16th generation. In the 10th generation we are talking about 512 ancestors, in the11th generation 1024, in the 12th generation 2048, in the 13th generation 4096, in the 14th generation 8192 ancestors, in the 15th generation 16384 ancestors and the 16th generation 32768 ancestors. However through the generations I think the total amount of St. Simon "blood" stays at around 10%. The further back in the pedigree the smaller the influence per occurance but the further back in time the greater the number of times he shows up in a pedigree.

But I think you are right the number of times St. Simon shows up in the pedigree of my two year old might be closer to 700 or 800 times.
