Oriental Rose Injured at Fair Grounds

Rose is entered in a dirt allowance at Fair Grounds, Saturday February 10th. She is shortening back up to the 6f distance. It's a six horse race but a tough one.

Ben, I know you enoyed the video of Smokie's race before. If you want to watch Rose's video replay it'll be the same site as before www.fairgroundsracecourse.com and she is in race 1, post position 2. For anyone else who wants to see it, once you've registered (free) at the Fair Grounds website you can login and see the replays of the races.

No ageecee, did you see her weaving in the home stretch? She's a very smooth mover, not like her at all. I'm still waiting to hear but I'm pretty worried.

Sorry, in my haste I forgot to say what happened for those who didn't see the race. Rose broke smartly and then dropped back gradually to last and seemed to be struggling in the final stretch. Although I didn't expect her to win in what was a fairly tough field, I'm concerned that something may be wrong. She was out of the frame for much of the latter part of the race but it seemed as though the jockey was going very very easy on her, tho' not exactly pulling her up, so she ended up about 18 lengths behind the pack. Time was 1.09.72, about 1.6 seconds off the track record, and the fractions were 21.96, 45.17, 56.03. Rose has done similar early fractions before in sprints, so it's hard to see that she could have been blown away by the pace.

Looking at the replay, it's clear she failed to change leads after the turn.

I'll post again when I hear what happened.

Get her checked out i didnt like her action down the lane. She bascially quit down the lane and jock just wrapped up.

I completely agree Ageecee. Rose normally has the most beautiful action and this did not look like her at all. Our horses are always vet-checked after their races, win or lose, even if there is no apparent problem. I imagine that's what's happening right now, and if our managing partner is down in New Orleans, we may not hear for a while yet what is the matter. But I'm almost certain that something is the matter.

Just got an update. Rose came out of the race with a 4 inch gash on the outside of her right rear leg, just above the ankle. It was bad enough to require 6 stitches. She is apparently a little off on that leg, and so they will evaluate it tomorrow when all the race day excitement is out of her system. Otherwise she scoped out ok and everything else seems fine.

Its not clear how much the leg might have affected her performance, but my personal opinion is that it likely did. She has never before failed to change leads in perfectly coordinated fashion after the turn, and she never moves in the unsteady way she did today.

Anyway, obviously until the leg gets evaluated some more, I'm still somewhat worried.

On another more positive note, Jim McMullen, Rose's trainer, had a very nice win today with Cloudy's Knight (owners S J Stables) in the Fair Grounds Breeders' Cup Handicap later in the afternoon. I was very happy for Jim as he brings on all the horses he trains very patiently and they are in beautiful condition.

This is the second horse of mine that has been cut badly in a race. Thanks for the good wishes and I'll keep you posted on how Rose is doing.

Im sure it was hurting her. Imagine you running a mile race with a 4 inch gash on your leg. At some point you will start to hurt and this is probably what happened to Rose.

I agree ageecee. How could it not have hurt? Even with the adrenaline flowing, it would at least have been enough to account for the strange action and failure to change leads. I'm quite glad, with hindsight, that the jockey didn't push her.

I haven't heard today about Rose's condition, but I'm sure that at the very minimum she will be getting time off for that cut to heal.

No specific update on Rose today, still causing concern as to how much damage there might be from the hit to her leg that caused the cut.

Well Toccet, thanks. Rose scoped out fine and is otherwise o.k., all that I know today is that the cut leg is still making Rose our 'main concern' (main because Smokie didn't scope o.k. after his race, but he'll be fine in the long run).

Well in Rose's case I think the peppermint factory does quite well too. I hope she gets a few extra while her cut is healing.
