This is a question for owners of white thoroughbreds that have been registered with APHA.
Arctic Cielo is registered as a breeding stock paint. Silly to me, since normal b/s paints are solid chestnut or bay and don't usually throw color (white). APHA says he does not have enough qualifying black skin.
I noticed on Evenheaven's website, that perfectlymemorable has regular paint papers. Hopefully Amber see's this post...does this mean she is registered as an overo? Cielo has very red ears in the winter, and red hair throughout his coat and tail. He is developing more black skin as he gets older, but not quite enough. _________________ SOME PEOPLE ARE LIKE SLINKIES. DL: I also have a white mare that is registered breed stock. There is not enough qualifying "color" on her. She has some black, but not enought to qualify for full registry so they classify her as a solid colored horse. My stallion is a medicine hat so he is registered full registry as he has enough qualifying color. _________________ Kim S. Leavitt

My perlino quarter horse is registered as breeding stock paint, as well. He has NO black skin. _________________ TRINITY RANCH - Home of WF Indian Bill, Perlino Stallion, dual reg. AQHA/APHA |

To get full registration papers you need black skin. So what I did was wait until Cloud Ten was a bit older and got him WET so I could find some area with black skin large enough to qualify. As the white guys get a bit older some tend to get more black spots so I guess if he has some darker spots now you might be able to change it. Once my stallion Cloud Ten is wet, I can see black spots even though there is no coloured hair there.
Odd rule but what can ya do... _________________ Living life for the journey, not the destination |

Although I stated I wouldn't respond here anymore, Katie, I felt I needed to help you with your information. I was told by a wise, older person to always take pictures of the foals as soon as they come out for APHA registration. Perfectlymemorable was born with a chestnut medicine hat which faded within 1 week of birth, but since I had the pictures, I sent in her registration and she is chestnut overo per APHA.
Always, always, always, take pics of them ASAP. My Indeulibull Rose filly was born with a bay medicine hat with a black mane (which is ALL gone now) and she is reg. APHA as a bay overo. _________________ "Every little girl deserves a horse"

Cloud Ten is registered as Overo. And his were done in October of his yearling year. This was because he is a palomino and was so light you could not even see colour on him the day after birth. So I waited and the older he got the more black pigment his got under the white coat. Now when he is dry you see white but when we wet him he looks almost appy across his shoulders and neck.
So yeah take picts as soon as they are born and if that is not enough then try waiting until they are one to see if any coloured skin comes in.

Thanks for the responses Blazingcoulours and Evenheaven. Since I did not own him at birth I do not have any foal pics of him. My welsh/tb filly was the same way with the red ears and mane. As she got older they faded.
I will have the opportunity to take Cielo to a few paint and pinto shows, and I would much rather show him in the colored classes. Seems silly to me how he would be classified as a breeding stock since he does add color to his foals, as most sabinos would. _________________ SOME PEOPLE ARE LIKE SLINKIES. Yeah it is dumb but the Paint registry was based on solid vs. white not white markings. And yeah I was going to post the same thing, get the pictures of the babies for registration asap!!! For the big guy it's too late though, unless he sprouts more color he's stuck in the breeding stock for showing. _________________ Every mighty oak was once an acorn that stood its ground. |
