MISS DOOLITTLE, his mare has been very productive. Any significance to Family 37?

I tried finding the type of mtDNA, and didn't find anything. Perhaps Pan Zaretta with her greater resources knows?

Alas, all I know is that there are no TB d-loop sequences in GenBank associated by definition with family 37.

Miss Doolittle tails to Melrose (GB) b f 1845 x Melbourne - Clarkia x Muley Moloch, imported to the USA 1857 by A. Keene Richards. Melrose's family continues to flourish via her daus. Target (imp. in utero) and more prominently Eliza Davis (Miss Doolittle's branch), but I'm not sure family 37 is active via any line other than Melrose's.

Is there a resource that I can access for researching families and the genetics they bring to the table? I have a 3yold from family 12b and never had a horse with a better cardio vascular system. His recovery after a workout is phenomenal.

Try looking at TBHeritage, the genetics section, read the article on "who's your Moma" That should give you a start.. At least on the mtDNA.

Ref. GenBank sequence EU580165 one or more individuals that are family 12-b by stud book record have been found to have an mtDNA haplotype different than that considered representative (by Hill et al. 2002) of the family 12 founder mare. A report entitled Thoroughbred horse mitochondrial DNA demonstrates closer than expected links between maternal genetic history and pedigree records that's been accepted by Equine Veterinary Journal, but not yet published, may offer more specifics as to the lineage(s) in which this haplotype was documented. The tap of branch 12-b is *Diana 1754. Fwiw, the evidence linking her to the Cullen Arabian and Grisewood's Lady Thigh is not unequivocal and the possibility of an error there has long been recognized.

The haplotype documented in 12-b is a sub-haplogroup A4 haplotype. Implications for aptitude and performance, unknown. Among GenBank sequences the same haplotype found in 12-b has been found in the Caspian, Connemarra, Sanfratellano, and Scottish Highland breeds, as well as in the North American Mustang.

Whatever his mtDNA haplotype, your 3yo sounds like a fine athlete. Good luck with him!

Just a quick question.

Are you looking for cardio fitness a la Marianna Haun's X factor theory, or are you looking into the distance abilities confered by the mtDNA?

As we looking toward the derby, I'm wondering about the distance.

If you haven't already, read Mahubah's Dialed In's Next Call: Kentucky Derby.
