O.K. stupid question of the century ...

I was just wondering, so please be kind, if there has ever been a " successfull " situation where a quality race horse serviced mares during a break from racing and then returned to racing. I honestly don't know how that would turn out? ! ? Confused

I believe there might have been a few - George Washington? - that went to stud and were found to be infertile so they returned to racing..

Square Eddie. If you google I'm sure you can find the whole story. I'm too tired to try to remember tonight. He's in training now and bred mares this past winter. I haven't read anything about if they'll breed outside mares to him this coming season. I think it's maybe Wilf that has a friend that knows the horse and if I recall correctly the horse has a very nice manner??? Something like that......

If you are asking if you could let a racehorse down in, say, December, use him to jump a few mares in Jan-Feb, return to race training in March, etc., I think that is quite possible. Whether that is done or not is not something that is likely to be reported on, since the stallion wouldn't be considered commercial at that level.

Red Jones (1951 Lucky Eleven - Mackenty Jean) World Record Holder for 2 furlongs. Had a daughter that ran second in the same race that he set the record. It was not uncommon back when horses were real horses.

Red Jones was not bred to many TB mares (obviously) but was a good QH sire.

I don't think it happens very often simply because once a stallion is introduced to mares he won't focus on racing. This can actually happen even before a stallion ever breeds a mare and then, unfortunately, as was the case with Lammtarra, they are retired.

I think it was Artax that covered a few but then went back to the track. He wasn't as nearly as dedicated to racing once he got back to the track, so at the time he went back to the shed...

It's just what I recall hearing.

Lucy you're right. He raced Nov 93 took a break until July 94. His first crop looks like ~ 30 foals born in 1995.

Didn't Seabiscuit also sire a few foals while recovering from a leg injury? Then came back to win the "Big Cap" and was retired for good?
