This certainly sounds like a wonderful race, easily one of the best of the year. _________________ May 2013: Plan ahead now for the Phalaris/Teddy Centennial!

What the Japan Cup connections say
By Nicholas Godfrey 3:05PM 25 NOV 2011 What they say
Hiroyushi Matsuda, trainer of Buena Vista
"Her weight was down from the previous race in the Tenno Sho but she didn't look well-toned - I think to have finished fourth under those conditions was pretty good. Since then we've given her a lot of work and she's handled it well; this time she is far better. After the Japan Cup there was the loss by a nose in the Arima Kinen and after that we seemed to be jinxed."
Kojiro Hashiguchi, trainer of Rose Kingdom

Japan Cup preview
"Just like in the Kyoto Daishoten, I had no complaints regardinghis condition for the Tenno Sho. He didn't quicken as well as he could have but I think that was a result of his getting caught up in the high pace. Luckily, he came out of the race fine and we have been able to work as we always have. At the very least we want a fast track. The field is strong but I hope he can be among the top finishers."
Mirco Demuro, rider of Victoire Pisa
"It's been eight months and he has had some hard training but his responses are sharp again. But, he's the kind of horse that doesn't give 100 percent in training. So in work this week I don't know really how much he gave me. But he is in good shape. He's in very good condition. The competition is tough and if he doesn't give it his all he's not going to be able to win."
John Hammond, trainer of Sarah Lynx
"She stays the distance well, she relaxes in the race and has very good acceleration. The moment you have a horse who's capable of staying the distance and accelerating, you always have a horse with a chance. The big question is whether she's really good enough to beat the best Japanese horses and Danedream. Her form to date suggests that she probably isn't quite as good as them, but she's a late maturing horse and she's improved with time and with racing. This is a big jump-up against this opposition and she is probably better on a slightly softer track and here, even if it rains, this track drains very well."
Naipaul Chatterpaul, trainer of Mission Approved
"The Japan Cup is now probably one of the toughest races with very competitive field. There are strong horses from Europe and Japan, but my horse is in good form and he should run a great race. Regarding the draw (11), a more inner stall like eight or seven would have been better, but you can't always get what you want."
Andrasch Starke, rider of Danedream
"She's definitely the best horse I've ever ridden and she gave me the best time in my career on October 2. To have a horse like her is a dream for a jockey - if she performs like her Arc run on Sunday, we'll be very confident. Of course, we'll need a clean race and a good draw, which helps a lot here. Anyway, I'm very confident with the filly. The direction of the race, left-handed or right-handed, doesn't matter for her.
"I think that the fillies and mares are very strong this year, including Snow Fairy, Shareta and Buena Vista. Our filly is also one of them. She can handle any type of ground, so there should be no problem. She travelled well, she's in good form and everything is going well. She weighs the same as last time."
Jeremy Lobel, groom with Shareta
"She's been improving by the day since the Arc so there is no reason to think she doesn't have a good chance. As long as it doesn't rain, this firm track will be an advantage to our filly. If she's able to press the pace in third or fourth, she has a good chance.
Hideaki Fujiwara, trainer of Eishin Flash
"The world's top fillies are going to have the advantage of the weight allowance but if he can give us what heis capable of giving us, then he can give us results."
Yasutoshi Ikee, trainer of Tosen Jordan
"He's maintained good condition since the Tenno Sho and he's been quickening well in work in tandem with To The Glory - I think he's running even better than before. Last time out it was the first time back after a two-month layoff. I think we can expect him to be in even better shape. Mentally, he's more eager to run than he had been and I think the extra distance will be a plus." _________________

I remember the great Stanerra, one of the first "interval" trained horse to achieve such thing.Tom was so proud and we(his first supporters)believed the world would finally accept that scientific training and hard work do pay off,but no the horse world is so backward.
It makes me laugh today even that all our findings were made fun at and spit on while now people seem to "discover"it,I am talking about barefoot horses,toe-grabs,lasix,bute and ulcers,steroids...ladder and interval workouts. In the old days we were thrown out the racetracks and had to run our well prepared horses under other trainers names...
Mind you even today, small time trainer gets called into stewards office for running barefoot or no lasix while big ones get praised when they do...

What I found interesting was that there were only two non-bays in the 16 horses in the race, both chestnuts -- and most of them seemed to be dark bays with lots of them appearing to have the sooty modifier. _________________ "you cannot be brilliant if you cannot run" -- bdw0617 |
