The inner "winterized" dirt track is the problem.
The argument is being made that relatively "cheaper" horses are breaking down, but you'll also come across the argument that such horses don't run fast enough to hurt themselves with the frequency of good horses, which is the defense of Santa Anita's present dirt surface.

The cheaper horses = too slow to hurt themselves assumes that every horse is perfectly uninjured going into every racing and training session. An old injury is more likely to be reinjured, and repetitive strain injuries obviously build up over time.

The influx of ridiculous purses for average horses creates the perfect storm of greedy owners/trainers and unfortunate horses. Yes it has been a mild spring, not good for a winterized track but it takes a lot of blind eyes to break down racehorses. Despite thousands of opinions concerning poor bloodlines and unsoundness ,the main component in breakdowns is impatience and poor horsemanship. Let the horse grow and strengthen to hold itself together and overcome any infirmities with maturity. Don't run a horse with problems even if they can be masked by raceday meds, DON'T! It's a no-brainer because it costs money to own/train racehorses and even more to enter and run but when a horse is not mentally or physically ready then why run? The horse will return in worse shape and then you are farther in the hole. Unfortunately horses are much tougher than is good for them and can overcome dumb owners and trainers for a long while until the point when they snap! Training is not scientific ,it's simple and just common sense........something that goes out of the window when purses skyrocket.
