Hi Madelyn, I am just treading water right now as the racing opportunities are awkward . As strange as it may seem I may go to Fort Erie this year ,this gives me a chance to try the ones that like Presque Isle's Tapeta surface on the Polytrack at Woodbine. This means only a 90 mile ship up the highway and both tracks have a good turf course and Tevvy has run 2 good races on the grass. Having raced there many times is a big plus even though the track's future is cloudy at the moment. I may head up there mid-April which is usually still cold but with the non-winter that we have had then conditions may be ok as I doubt that Lake Erie ever froze up this year. The ridiculous warmth here in Fla has the horse's coats going haywire but not in a good way and I fear that they might turn back if we do get a late cold snap. Tevez seems well and even though he is very strong now I don't turn him loose on these 5 furlong training tracks here. I believe that the longer you take to prepare them after a good lay up ,then the longer they will last. Only time will tell but on one last note I recently acquired Tevez' 3yr old half sister for a minimal sum and she is enjoying a good time out at grass, hopefully she will mature and be able to run like her brother and mother. I was surprised that she had been raced 4 times already as she is rather weak still and needs time but I like the way she moves at the canter around the paddock.

Sounds like a good plan. If I visit my family up around Niagara I will try to brave the fort and stop in for a visit.

We also have had just obnoxious weather the past couple of weeks with highs in the 80's and I have mares who have actually MOULTED leaving naked mottled skin in huge patches. We have been bathing since they were sweating under their puffy winter coats and putting baby oil in the rinse just doesn't do enough. I am going through buckets of skin lotion as we try to keep the bare skin from drying out so the summer coat can make it through.

How many are in your stable this year?

That's a good work! We've had the weirdest weather. It was hot yesterday and then last night hail the size of ping pong balls along with torrential rain, all the while it's about 70 degrees!

OK I gave him a pipe-opener the other day and he is now entered in a starter going 5 1/2 on Monday here on the dirt. It's not ideal but it will do for his first outing this year and he does not have to ship which is nice. Funnily enough it's not a tough race and he is drawn the outside in a 7 horse field and hopefully he can get a piece of the purse as I owe the blacksmith.

Wilf, looks like he pressed a pretty lively pace. He should be double tough next time with that race under his belt..

Thanks Zinn, he was awfully sharp after his long vacation and scrambled like a quarter horse on the dirt. I was not surprised that he tired at the head of the lane but I was rather ticked off with the jostling he got from the two favourites at that point. Fortunately he seems ok and did not have to ship anywhere to get that first run under his belt. Actually I will look out for a grass race next to see if he can reproduce his two runs on it in 2010. Last year I gave up trying to get him on it and had fun at Presque Isle , a place we may still end up visiting through the summer.

Well the weather forecast is non too promising for grass this weekend so I am shipping to Presque Isle on friday in a nice spot . Jamie "Loch" Ness has one in there so we may all be jostling for 2nd place. Oh well.

Yes that was nice especially as the weather was horrendous and yet the track was perfect. Jamie Ness' horse obviously never showed up so Tevvy won comfortably under a smart ride from Pinto who is my buddy's girlfriend and can ride a bit.

That's kind of you Zinn but I don't have the resources to chase a nice one and owner's impatience with young horses puts me off anyone but my close friends as far as training for an third party. On a brighter note, a close friend of mine breaks all the homebred horses for Paul Reddam who owns I'll Have Another,he also trains some of his cheaper ones. Doug O'Neil even gave him a shout out after the Derby win. His name his Edward Freeman and so I am enjoying the Triple Crown ride in a vicarious way and am delighted for them.

It seems Wilf you've got it pretty good right where you are, under the radar. You quietly pick up horses and go where you want to go. No convincing, no consoling, no asking. Having people try to throw money at you because your success becomes attractive is a tough beast to master.
When the youngster comes along that brings reporters to your stall door I won't be suprised though.
