Way Awesome
The horse in 2nd rallied, and she just pulled out - jockey didn't move a muscle.

| Effortless. The jockey said she never came out of second gear, and I believe him. Truly a $500,000 paid workout. |

In the lead-up to Black Caviar’s International debut at Royal Ascot, I thought I would look back over her undefeated 21-start career and make special mention of the only three times - where for one or two strides - we thought there may be a chance she could be beaten but like all champions she always pulled out something special.
Part One
The first was on the 9th April, 2011 in the Gr 1 T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick in Sydney.
This was Black Caviar’s 12th start and the first time she was racing away from her home town of Melbourne – having travelled 1000km by float to Sydney.
This was also the first time she had raced in a clockwise direction (Melbourne, Adelaide, Western Australia, Northern Territory race anti-clockwise, while New South Wales and Queensland are clockwise).
For the first time Black Caviar was to meet equine colossus Hay List on his home turf. Hay List is seriously ‘the incredible hulk’ of Australian sprinters while Black Caviar more akin to ‘wonder woman’.
Hay List had scooted clear in running and was three lengths clear with 250m to run.
He was absolutely motoring in front up the rise at Randwick and for a stride or two the champion mare looked to be in trouble.
But it was only for a stride or two.
Black Caviar got serious for the first time in her career, let her ‘Michael Phelps-like energy efficient action’ glide her up to Hay List…and straight past him.
What looked like a race at the 250m was all over by the 100m with Black Caviar going on to win by almost 3 lengths.
Although it was a dead (slightly wet) track, she still ran a new race record stopping the clock at 1.08.71, the last 600m in 34.77.
The cheers then applause from the 30,000-plus crowd was deafening as she went past the winning post and continued all the way back to the mounting yard. In fact race goers were still out of their seats in the grandstand some 20 minutes after the race – simply in awe at what they had just witnessed - and all eyes still transfixed on the champion mare as she paraded the winning rug.

It was just one of those fabulous races – a privilege to witness. |

Part Two
14th May and Black Caviar aims for win No. 13 in the Group 1 BTC Cup run over 1200m.
Team Caviar travel to new horizons again - this time the state of Queensland and Doomben racecourse. It's another 1000km north from Sydney, 2000km from her home in Melbourne.
Doomben is renowned as a tight turning track and it will be another start in the clock-wise racing direction.
Black Caviar will again meet 'the incredible hulk' Hay List - the only horse to ever prove a genuine threat to her in a race.
Hay List again goes to the front with Buffering (who will later develop into a seriously good Gr 1 performed sprinter) on his outside. Black Caviar settles two lengths back in third position.
On the turn Black Caviar ranges up on their outside. The turn is tight and Black Caviar doesn't immediately glide around it, almost taking it with a slight wobble, so much in fact she seems to have lost some ground.
Hay List alternatively rails like a greyhound and seems to have got slightly away from Black Caviar. It was only for a brief moment.
Jockey Luke Nolen knows the champion he is riding so well, gives her time to balance up and then sets off after Hay List.
At about the 200m she draws level with the giant sprinter and again leaves him, gliding past to go on and win by two lengths.
It wasn't her most decisive victory but as always, the champion mare just knows where the winning post is. Buffering was five lengths behind Hay List in third spot.
Past the post and in a special racing moment and a great act of sportmanship, Hay List's jockey Glen Boss moves alongside Luke Nolen and raises his hand to triumphantly salute the pair with a 'high five', which Nolen immediately reciprocates.
Black Caviar ran 1.08.85 on a slightly wet track, the last 600m in 32.87. It was .97 outside Takeover Target's track record.
A crowd of 20,134 packed Doomben to witness the super race and the champion mare.
Black Caviar was all set to start two weeks later in the time-honoured Group 1 Doomben 10,000 over 1350m - the longest distance up to this point she would have contested - but days out from the race trainer Peter Moody wasn't happy with her and ordered an immediate spell.
Here is the memorable race - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XokI41jLgv8 |
