Hi Louis,
You know when you talk about your theory concerning breeding, there is usually no harm done....but when you talk about herbs that are illegal and try to tell people they are not, you need to be stopped because it is no longer harmless. Below comes from page 17 of the CHRB's list of illegal class 3 drugs. Valerenic acid, which is alphabetically listed and is the essential oil of the Valerian root/plant....it is a class 3 drug with a class C penalty if found in your horses blood/urine sample. This comes from the Racing Board that oversee's California racing and those trainers that you sell it to and are using it in direct violation of the boards rules. The vets you asked about it should be informed that is an illegal class 3 drug. TJ
Listing by Classification
Class 3: Drugs that may or may not have generally accepted medical use in the racing horse, but the pharmacology
of which suggests less potential to affect performance than drugs in Class 2.

Three different trainers that bought Valerian from me all tested negative after their TB won. Those tb were very nervous before they calmed down using valerian. _________________ Those without sin cast the first stone.

That is just appalling. So you are selling an illegal drug, one banned by the CHRB. You don't know what else those vets gave those horses to mask the Valerian. In all honesty, I can't believe you are admitting to doing this, Louis.
What do you say to the fact that Valerian is banned by the CHRB? |

Hi Louis,
Guess they got lucky or they withdrew long enough prior to running...yet it still isn't legal and you can't tell me that the Vets and the trainer's you sold it to are unaware of that fact. I know what Valerian root can do for a horse. Aside from calming a nervous horse it's very good in helping horses who are prone to colic. We always kept an actual Valerian root in the water bucket of all the horses, as well as a tablespoon full of baking soda in the feed. We used the baking soda as an aid to prevent tying up, since it was known to counteract lactic acid buildup in the horse. Both these harmless ingredients have been taken to the extreme in modern day racing and a safe viable and natural remedy has now been banned because of it. TJ |

I've had wonderful results with magnesium supplementation on a very nervous TB gelding. I use SmartCalm on him, although there's MagRestore and Quiessence and some others. The science behind it is that magnesium is required for proper muscle function, and if there isn't enough mag relative to calcium, the horse will show nervous behaviours, be twitchy, sore, etc.
It didn't make him a deadhead--he's still a pistol when he wants to be--but it went from an animal who was always one step away from going into outer space to an animal who was trainable and paying attention. He also now gives pony rides to little kids in a round pen, something I would never have dared do before, and while he gets this long-suffering "why are you doing this to me?" look, he follows quietly at my side, me guiding him with two fingers on his martingale (always for safety with the kids).
If it will help your horse, it takes about two weeks of supplementation before you start seeing anything. Mag is cheap as chips and it's difficult to oversupplement...if the horse gets loose stools, back off on the dose. Something else that helps if the horse is hot and sweaty is giving it an epsom salt bath (magnesium sulfate), sponge it on and leave it for 20 minutes, and then rinse well.
If he's stressing out at race time, maybe earplugs and a hood? |
