Advice for a better site

Postby SemparQuel » Fri Jan 04, 2013 12:57 am

1- Use a different color for geldings (in progeny reports, and in stakes results)
2- Invent an easy way to distinguish horses with same progeny registered in the DB of the site (in progeny reports, and in stakes results)
3- In any report, right-clickking on a horse name, allows to access reporta and actions for this horse. Very good! If you can, add access to photo of the horse, if available
4- If the info is available, invent some way to distinguish living and dead horses

Deceased Y/N field

Automatically purge "sadly broke down" this is a pedigree site not a site to report the life and death of a thoroughbred. OR, change the accomplishment to "Biography".

I agree that comments might be kept not corny--but those of us who track injuries and try to find genetic reasons for it like to know who broke down, and how, and what the injury was.

Unnecessary on a horse's pedigree page. People come to this site to view pedigrees not to see a horse was running in a 4K claiming race and was vanned off. Those comments can be detrimental to the owner, trainer and breeder.

It's also THOSE breeders and owners who give the owners of this business money for "advanced" features. I can't see they would be amused by someone's assumptions regarding the welfare of a horse.

I'm not talking about assumptions. Valid factual information only. If your horse is injured, it's injured.

In most cases, the only person who truly knows what's going on with a horse is the owner--and they're very unlikely to post such an update. Everybody else is making an assumption.

I like the idea of some sort of indicator for deceased horses. I also sort of like the idea of having a different color for geldings, although there is a field that differentiates them from colts. It just takes a little more squinting. :)

Now that there are so MANY free or reasonable tools out there for hypomatings, etc., I would really like to see some more advanced reporting capabilities, plus the ability to produce a print out of a horse's family that looks like a catalog page.

The message board is like a wildflower patch - any attempt to weed it would likely kill it so I don't like Jeff's suggestion at all.

Since there are no "geldings" in a horse's pedigree except for the horse itself, I don't see where changing the color would help, except maybe in the "progeny" listing.. Regarding the progeny listing, I'd like to be able to sort on more than one column, ie: SEX and then YEAR for example so I could see all of the fillies/mares by a particular stallion in a particular year.

I have many more ideas.. more later.
So Run for the Roses, as fast as you can.....

Please note that this forum is for suggestions specific to the PEDIGREE SIDE of this site, not the message board side; therefore I have removed the posts regarding limiting posting on the message board. The site owners have asked for input regarding reports, etc, so let's please stay on topic.

I think it's a marvelous site and thank the owners for it. I can't think of any improvements other than updating the sts/wins/earnings on many horses.

I've no problem with the extraneous information posted on some horses, so long as it is accurate.

I would like to see the gsv scores and the conduit mare profiles updated.

A field for year of death would be great to have.

Once upon a time there was a beta app (something that was never in any of the pull-down menus) that would generate a male version of a female family report, i.e. a male line descendancy. This handy little tool hasn't been functional for a couple of years now. It would be nice to have it back, especially if geldings could be shown in a different color. :D

The drop down page for female family is what keeps me subscribing. It presents mare production in a better and different aspect than a catalog page. The trend for black type through multiple generations is a valuable tool. Increasing the depth to include a link to a sire page might be helpful as well. However if the info isn't guarded against trolls none of it is valuable, it's just another $10 a month for cheap entertainment. IMHO

I'm talking about comments like "vanned off" at such and such date when the official race chart says so. That's factual.

Here's an example. What good does it do to stress the fact the horse is dead? Do you think her owners really want to be reminded a horse THEY cared for is dead?

http://www.pedigreequery.com/wildcats+smile

This is exactly why including this information is unnecessary.

I'd suggest removing all that "fluff" and just keep the site as what it is intended for, pedigrees or at the very least scrub keywords like euthanized, broke down, etc.

And does anyone who is trying to sell stallion prospects or broodmares in foal want to see things like "last raced for a 4K claiming tag"?
