Re: Chrome priced at $40,000
Cree- thank you for posting article. I think Chrome will be very well managed as a stallion
and I think he will make his own page at stud, just as he did as a racehorse. He will certainly
produce some very pretty babies!

Re: Chrome priced at $40,000
KarenKaren- I am currently paying the bills for two OTTB horses who were basically dumped by their original owners. They got their share of the winnings, and I got the bills for 2 TBs for 6+ years so far, and probably 10 years more in future. I don't consider myself one of racings "too many fans" and I definitely pay the bills (that someone else should have been responsible for). I personally like California Chrome and I think he has a decent shot at making a good sire. I wish him well. Racing fans come in all shapes, including mine, and many people, including myself, found Chrome inspirational. However, you are just as entitled to your opinion as I am to mine. Hope you have a Happy Holiday.

"PAYING " for OTTB isnt the same as paying for anything in horse racing. TRY TO THINK ABOUT IT. FIRST.

By the Way, there IS NOT anything inspirational about a situation that is just a SHAM.

Re: Chrome priced at $40,000
I think paying for an OTTB makes a difference to the horses involved. Whether or not I am paying for horse racing is of less importance to me (and probably to them) than the reality that I saved them.

Re: Chrome priced at $40,000
KarenKaren, I specifically mentioned that I was spending "monopoly money" and that this was a imaginary
exercise. I am not planning to get another horse, as I have a commitment to the ones I already have. I posted the topic to stimulate discussion and to learn more from experienced breeders. I have never bred a horse, nor will I, but I am interested in learning about breeding anyway. You may have noticed that the board is quiet at best and welcoming people who are trying to learn, might not be a bad idea. I should also mention that I work for a living in a non-racing/horse field. That's why I can afford to pay for my two OTTB's bills.

I will tell you what, you want to learn. WHERE were you when CC. was at the track at LOS Al? Because I was THERE.

Negative posts like karenkarenn's above, keep people from participating in the forum. It's sad that there are people out there so willing to spread and share misery.
Re: Chrome priced at $40,000
Agreed. I don't really understand why this conversation turned so ugly. We're talking about the stud fee of one of the best racehorses we've seen in awhile. Yes, I fully agree his pedigree is something to hold against him, but he's one of the soundest, winning-est horses we've seen retire in the US in awhile. He's certainly exciting, and why not say something positive about him.
I always thought he was a bit narrow up-front and turned out, but I'd love to hear comments on his physical from someone who has seen hiim.

Re: Chrome priced at $40,000
I agree with Cree - except I can't express an opinion on his conformation since I've not seen him in person. I think he has more legitimacy at stud than a LOT of other horses but his pedigree is a bit of a stopper. I wouldn't pay $40K for him if I had that to spend (and a mare good enough to spend that on) because I think there are more legitimate horses with better pedigrees in that price range. For me, he is a wait-and-see kind of horse; it will all depend on how those first foals turn out.
So Run for the Roses, as fast as you can.....
Re: Chrome priced at $40,000
Chrome's family, (A4) has always been one of my favourites. However it doesn't go through Courtly Dee who seems to be the most recent genetic powerhouse of the family.
If I had 40k, (which I don't) I would find it difficult to justify spending that sort of money on him. As stated by others, his race record says high fee, but his pedigree just isn't there.
Oddly for me, being a son of Lucky Pulpit doesn't bother me as much as his week bottom side.
Regards,
Shergar
