2017 Derby PP's

Postby TJ » Tue Apr 18, 2017 12:45 pm

With 19 days to go the 2017 Derby past performances (listed in order of derby prep race points accrued) have been released, courtesy of Brisnet.com. I don't know about the rest of you...but 19 days might not be long enough to figure this one out:>) Guess we can use this thread for any news on withdrawn or injured runners. TJ

I've read somewhere they may bypass with Cloud Computing as well.

Still waiting on Cloud Computing's decision to run or not to run:>)....in the meantime Pletcher will most likely withdraw Malagacy. So the probability of Asmussen's pair of Untrapped and Looking at Lee getting in the Derby lineup is looking good.
There is still no official confirmation Thunder Snow will make the trip, which will open yet another door for Desormoux and Desourmoux to get their maiden, Sonneteer, into the Derby. Stay tuned. TJ

At this point, I think I'm going to root for Irish War Cry. Not for any logical reason other than I like him. :D

This year, kind of a "meh" field for me... just not that excited about any particular horse.
I've been more into watching and keeping tabs on the older horses this year... Arrogate, Songbird, etc.

I think they are keeping Twisted Tom in New York stakes, I read that somewhere. Sounds like he's a giant horse too.

McCraken just had a helluva work at Churchill. If he continues that sort of training I am using him in some way on Derby Day.

Girvin is training in z-bar shoes, his trainer is playing coy...but this can't be a good thing. I'm sure Mike Smith will get to the bottom of this, he won't ride one with no shot going in?
Pletcher still on the fence with Malagacy and still no official confirmation from Goldolphin on Thunder Snow who is expected here Sunday? Could open the door for 3 new numbers out in the cold...at the very least they will have 4 AE's in this years derby filed. This is more like it...we were spoiled in last years Derby with so few ins and outs and ups and downs:>) TJ

With a week to go Malagacy is still a possibility...but not a probable starter. Hopefully a decision will come shortly. Pletcher did say if he works today, they will most likely run in the Derby...so hopefully we will have the answer later today?
Pletcher also noted Battalion Runner didn't handle the CD track as well as others. Concerning Tapwrit's poor performance, Pletcher said Tapwrit didn't appreciate the Keeneland surface, but worked much better over the CD surface....getting 5/8ths in 1:00.20 and galloped out 3/4's in 1:12.80. Always Dreaming also handled the CD surface well working a strong 5/8ths...though a bit tough to settle early, he worked fast and galloped out very strong...going 1:12.60 for six furlongs, 1:25.60 for seven and 1:40 for the mile. Easily the best move yesterday by any of the Derby contenders. Click below to read up on other works of interest by Derby and Oaks contenders. TJ

Malagacy and Battalion Runner out.
I'm starting to think Battalion Runner is on the unsound side of things. Malagacy doesn't want to go that far. A good move for both horses.

Always Dreaming is talented, but a little too nutty and I think if he's hard to control now, what's he going to be like when there are horses that go with him?

Hi Cree,
Thanks for the update....it was expected today and I'm glad they didn't drag it out, it's the right thing to do when others are waiting in the wings. Also glad to see Thunder Snow will run...now we really will have fun handicapping:>) So with these outs...looks like Lookin At Lee and Sonneteer draw in, so that puts Royal Mo and Gary Stevens on the bubble:>)
Yes I agree, Malagacy needs a van to go a mile and a quarter:>) Battalion Runner was sick when he missed training so it put him in catch up mode. His 2nd in the Wood was pretty good and I really don't think it's a soundness issue?? I saw the work and he was spinning his wheels going that 1/2 at CD....I think Pletcher made the right move not running. We will see him down the road in the Preakness or I think the Belmont Stakes might be the one they will point to. Don't get sour on Always Dreaming (that was 1/2 the reason they took Battalion Runner out with no qualms, same owner as Dreaming)...Always Dreaming put in a great move yesterday...he doesn't seem to get tired. He was too eager in his work...but where he trains is very secluded, so I think he needed to check out his new surroundings. If he acts the same when he gallops later this week...then it might be a problem....but I don't think he will. TJ

With that impressive work Always Dreaming had the other day...McCraken came out today and looked just as impressive...minus the pulling. He steadily picked it up and just kept right on galloping out the way AD did. Both giving the impression the mile and a quarter won't be an issue?
From what I've seen so far, these two are easily the best two works I've seen of all the contenders. Though McCraken was well within himself and went about a second slower then AD...he has the edge because he's undefeated at CD and happy to rate. I have to see AD gallop later this week to see if he's not as rank? See for yourself...here's the two works. TJ
