pfrsue, just for kicks would you please tell us what you think the word"coonass" means or relates to. |

Okay, but who asked me? Who is this "us" who asked for clarification?
If the term wasn't vulgar, Rogue wouldn't have quoted it in her list of examples. I perceive it as being racist, admittedly relying mostly on the root syllable. If it is a regional term which means something completely different, I'll stand partially corrected, but I can't imagine that it isn't a derogatory term. Beyond that, it's apropos of exactly nothing, because I was making an aside that at a different forum, it would have earned an instant ban. I stand by that. It simply would not be tolerated by any mod there. At this forum, I am not a moderator. Even if I was, there currently isn't a rule in place that addresses anything like that, so it wouldn't be actionable.
In any case, my comments were intended as a reply to Rogue's question, and never intended to derail into a vocabulary debate. Apologies for that. |

I am the first to admit, because I am twisted, warped, and really try not to sweat the small stuff, I found myself and my coworkers laughing out loud at some of that stuff. (For the record coonass in our minds really was pitured literally, to which I would further apply I guessed it was southern slang as down here is the only place I hear the word)
But back to the point I was going to make.....darn it what was it..... oh yeah..... obviously if you view the current standing of the poll it is split in thirds. Which means........ the word stalemate comes to mind. Literally it looks like we all agree to disagree.
I am still for free flow exchange of ideas, no matter how one posts it. I guess I am lucky b/c I can simply activate an inner ignore button and be done. As for kids and language.... have you been in a typical middle school lately?? And since I don't have them(working in aforementioned school envionment was great birth control) maybe I am biased but being 34 years of age there is probably nothing that anyone under 20 has to say that would make me care anyway. Aardvaek and pfrsue,
Coonass is not a "Vulgar term". Its a person with of Cajun ethnicity.
Its just a name used for our culture down here. Nothing more. And its hardly offensive. You can call me a connass every day it wouldnt hurt my feelings one bit. |

heh. I grew up with the idea that 'coonass' was an impolite term for LA natives of a certain socio-economic background. A lot like white trash or trailer trash up here.
A decent portion of my ancestry could be considered "coonass" as my grandfather was bred in LA and was either Cajun or Creole. We're not exactly sure. Plaquemine Parish?
The people I've heard use the term were not doing so in a kind fashion so I assumed it was something you wouldn't bring up if a "coon ass" invited you to dinner.
It's interesting, very, to know what actual LA residents think of it. Thank you! |

Any name with either the word coon or ass in it, would seem reasonable to deem offensive. |

so Larry has two coonass stallions and ageecee is just a plain coonass?
It sounds offensive to me but I will set my personal impressions aside and let you be coonasses. |

I am all for a "free flow exchange of ideas" as well. Just not for a free flow of name calling or slamming of one poster's position on something versus an opposing position. That would certainly seem to lack the "free flow" component.
Perhaps there is more concensus than meets the eye in the poll stalemate. Perhaps decorum and a free flow exchange of ideas go hand-in-hand. |

aardvark,
You would love being a coonass down here in Cajun country. I take it as a compliment when being called a coonass. But a true coonass eats crawfish and sucks the heads. Are you willing to do that? There are coonasses and true coonasses. can you guess which one i am? |

Rogue, I can fully appreciate the frustration that you must be feeling and wholeheartedly agree that it’s not right to talk about someone when they aren’t around to defend themselves. However, the difference is that BDW does not have the option of posting and Sam does and apparently chooses not to do so.
What I found to be most offensive by certain posts was the my-way-or-the-highway attitude and the continuous cut-n-paste festivals that appeared to have a lone purpose of simply dissecting the post of another in a point by point fashion because they ventured out into the land of differing opinions. When coupled with malicious aggression and foul language - well, that’s just plain creepy.
I wasn’t here in October to see whatever nuclear meltdown occurred then - it looks like the people that supported actions then and aren’t now are merely tired of the replay. I have enjoyed posts by Sam and BDW and would very much like to see both of them return. I have been offended by both on a few occasions and at the same time acknowledge that I may have taken something that either said the wrong way. No big deal. Obviously, I’m not without fault and hopefully anyone that I may have offended will kindly overlook my digressions. Six months from now, if either poster (that we aren’t mentioning) goes out of their way to intentionally insult and demean other posters sharing opposing opinions will I feel this same way? Probably not. For the record, since I don’t know either poster, it’s certainly not a personal issue.
I did not come on this site to do anything other than learn about racing and TB’s from those that know it/them best. This is a great site - I don’t have the time or inclination to look around for a more peaceful one. Thanks for trying to make the site grow for the betterment of an open exchange of information on Thoroughbreds.
BTW, I don’t know Ageecee from Adam’s housecat. But, if I called him a “crawfish-head-sucking-coonass that was baptized at an early age to a boudin burger“, as vulgar as that sounds, he would likely smile and not find it as an insult. They’re great people - as plain and simple as that. Most of them would treat you nicer than your own grandmother ever did and would give you their last morsel of food if you were both hungry. (But, you better tell them that it was cooked just right or it wouldn’t happen again.) Point being…maybe let some of it slide and if someone truly feels insulted - take it seriously.
