i think invasor is a lot like big red in the sense that his brilliance in his own ability, really hid his breeding and what he really ants to do. I think invasor could have ran 12f and not broken much of a sweat. I think his offspring are going to be the same. not slow per say but they want a lot of ground. I think he will be a great and much needed stanima influence.

You may be right, bdw0617. The first crop Invasors weren't ready for graded stakes earnings at two, none even ran in a graded stakes. But people pay big bucks to breed and buy potential TC horses. At this (early) point in the TC only Five Sixteen has got any mention - for the Belmont. None have yet run in graded stakes. Having one do well would be more glamorous for Invasor than being seen as a stamina influence for post TC races, so I'm hoping.

Here comes The Shadwell Stable horse, El Aqsa, trained by Kieran Mc Laughlin. He ran in an msw at Gulfstream, broke very poorly, ran 4 wide and only beat 2 horses. His second race will be a $75,000 msw at Aqueduct at a mile and 70 yds on the inner track. It's an interesting race. Quorum, the horse that ran 2nd a neck ahead of Five Sixteen at this distance, was dismissed in the ML at 15/1. El Aqsa is the 4th ML choice at 6/1. The first three choices have multiple msw 2nd and 3rds at Churchill, Gulfstream and Aqueduct. So he has a tall task, but MacLaughlin is showing confidence in him. He gets Lasix this time.

Another Invasor racing on Sat Mar 3 is Invasor Girl in Chantilly, France.

She raced in England last year and was 2nd on the all weather at 7f then threw a clunker as the favorite at 7f on turf. She was then transferred to Belgian trainer Nino Minner, who has run horses in Dubai - an exciting non turf prospect. He nominated her to several French races in Jan and Feb but she didn't run. The Chantilly race is a mile claimer and she's in for top price (25,000 euros) so she carries top weight, and others have better race records. Also, she's running as a foreign horse so she gets much less prize money. He may just want to get a race into her.

It would be very cool if she races in Dubai but aren't the races leading to the World cup invitational? She's getting a late start, like her brothers and sisters. Good luck to her on turf this time!

Al Aqsa was 4th of 11 on a muddy (sealed) track. That makes him a contender in this group, good news.

He was off "a bit slow" and rallied from 9th to 4th. Better than the really bad start in his debut. The muddy track probably didn't bother him, Invasor was a mudder and seems to have passed that on to Vader and High Compression, among others.

Invasor Girl finished 11th of 13 and got an official rank of 0p, meaning she was never a factor. That's 2 of 2 for turf.

Two Invasors race on March 7 at Laurel:

Red Flair is in a $10,000 mcl at a mile for a purse of $13,000. His MO is to chase the pace into the stretch and give way, his history is 6,3,6,3,6,3,7. The pattern suggests one of his better races is coming up but it's only been 2 weeks and he has an outside post, so who knows?

Gagne is in an msw at 6f with a purse of $33,000. She was last entered in an mcl at half her usual tag and was heavily favored. It looked like an Invitation to Claim. She was scratched on race day, though, and moves up in class, instead. Her MO is to be close to the front as long as possible - the inside position might help.

Gagne moved forward when stepping up in class.

Sent off at 22.10 she came in 3d, 4 1/2 lengths behind the winner, in her MSW. She earned $3,630.

After breaking 2nd she was fifth after a 1/4 in 23.22, she was also fifth at the 1/2 instead of near the front, was put in a drive mid-turn where she lost ground in previous races, went 4 wide and "continued on with interest", moving up to 3d. Looks like a future winning strategy - especially useful later, at longer distance than 6f.

Red Flair broke second form post 10, passed the front runner to be first at the 1/2 then "faltered in the upper stretch", ending up 9th, 14 lengths behind the winner. The front runner crossed the finish line in 10th place 42 3/4 lengths behind the winner. Neither of them got a check.

Too bad he didn't run the way Gagne did. He has speed that could be used as tactical speed for position then he could cruise and have something left for the drive to the finish. Wonder what the trainer's plan is? This is the first time Red Flair ever got the lead before faltering, for what it's worth - he may be getting stronger even if not any closer to winning.

Thanks for posting that. Catlaunch is truly one of a kind, as is Ivan. If one ever has the chance to see Cat run it is worth the trip. He is a gem (and a true gentleman I might add  ).

Photon is first on the also eligible list for a $30,000 claimer with a purse of $34,500 at Gulfstream on March 10 at 1 1/16 miles on turf. Photon never raced on turf or had an official work on turf. Makes you wonder if Dutrow expects the race to come off the turf - right, Photon has MTO after his name, Main Track Only obviously. Photon's jockey is John Velazquez, who is also the jockey for the ML favorite, Gunman. Photon's maybe race:

Azure Hills is entered in an mcl at Fair Grounds on March 10 for a tag of $10,000, which reduces her weight. The race is a mile and 70 yds for a purse of $18,000.

Sorry, Azure HIlls runs March 11.

I've been curious to see what Rick Dutrow does with Photon. He thinks he can beat $30,000 turf horses on dirt and win back his claiming price ...

Expression already won back her $35,000 claiming price in 6f sprints. Her trainer bought her for himself. As a trainer at Finger Lakes, NY, he can't be rolling in dough so that must have been a priority. It will be interesting to see if he stretches her out next. My first thought was Finger Lakes??? But Baker runs horses at all the NY tracks, once took 7 horses to Saratoga and won with 3 of them. Good horseman, whose father was a trainer, too. He's passed the 1000 win mark, no big horse yet - maybe Expression?

bdw0617 said Invasors want a lot of ground - that's been true for them at 2 when the only wins were at a mile. But it looks more like slow development because at 3 we have two sprint only winners (Cayetano P is the other) and Vader just won a sprint...

Expression stretches out and moves up in class on March 14 in the Limit Stakes at a mile on the inner track for a purse of $75,000. Cornelio Velazquez is riding one of the Pletcher horses, David Cohen has the mount.

It's the only stakes and the featured race of the day. Expression won't be the favorite, Hard Mystery (Hard Spun) already won a starter stakes and a starter Optional claiming at a mile at Aqu, and there's an allowance winner at a mile and 70 in there, too. Really hoping she hits the board. (That's the voice of reason speaking. Another voice says she's not really a sprinter and could step way up and wouldn't that be something! I've got a great story going in my mind.)

Five Sixteen is also racing March 14 in an MSW at 1 1/8 miles in the inner track for a purse of $65,000. This looks like an easier race than his 1 1/8 mile race against Raconteur (who finished in the middle of the field in the Gotham, won by Hansen).

March 14 is a big day.

Photon's race stayed on turf so he scratched.

But Dutrow is trying again March 15. Photon is entered as MTO for a tag of $25,000 in a Gulfstream turf race at a mile for a purse of $36,925.

Good luck to them. My "gut" still tells me these horses will only do better as they get older and at longer distances. That's my story and I'm sticking with it :).
