Dreamer, racing in America isn't governed by one single body, each state has their own rules and regulations as well. A disclaimer at the start of the novel will point out that all matters are fictitious, and similarities or exact info is merely coincidence.
I wouldn't worry too much about names yet, that would be the last step in my opinion, but just make a whole bunch up and then check them, the chances of you choosing the exact names that have been placed on the retired names list is slim. You may want to avoid any taken names that have raced recently (last 5 years) and with any acclaim (stakes horses, any involved in controversy, top trainers etc)
Movies like On the Muscle would be a good one for you to watch, as well as the book "Professional Care of the Racehorse" by TA Landers. That booked helped a lot when I wrote my trainers test. "Training the Racehorse" by Tim Fitzgeorge-Parker, and MANY online publications are a start.
My suggestion, read a bunch, then ask more detailed questions of the people on the forum. You will get better answers.

Well, this is going to be a script, but there can be a disclaimer in there anyway.
The chances of wanting names on the retired names list may be slim, but the chances of wanting a name that is in use now may be bigger. But maybe I´ll worry about hat late, even though I find it easie to write the horse´s name. But that´s not the biggest problem.
I´ll see if I can find that movie and that book, and look for onliine publications.

Thank you everyone.

Well, if it's a script, it can be as far from reality as you want, Hollywood does it all the time! Laughing

I´m sure they do, but I still want it to be at least some authenticity.
And the other story I started writing a while ago I plan on writing as a book...

Is there anywhere you can see what colors trainers use for the jockey´s clothes?

Are you asking about silks? The colours that they are made in are decided by the trainer, or the owners. Horses run in the colour of the owner, or racing stable, or sometimes trainer if owners don't have their own.
Google jockey silks and see what comes up. From what I understand, silks have to be approved by the track?

Yes, Shannon, that was what I meant. I wasn´t really sure what to call it.
I thought I would avoid using the same colors as someone very successful.

Dreamer,

I have taught writing for many years:

Rule # 1: WRITE WHAT YOU KNOW.

Rule #2: Same as #1.

I know that´s what`s best and a lot easier, but I´m still going to give it a try.
If you should always only write about what you know, I think there are some books that never would have been written. I´m not the only one that has to do research before I write a story.
I´m going to give it a try. it may turn out good, or it may not.

Does some farms have their own race track where they can train the horses? Is that only big farms, or can a smaller farm (small stable) have that too?

What injuries can stop a horse from racing (done racing)?

Some of the small farms have there own track. Bowed Tendons will cause a tb to stop his racing career, some tb come back & some dont.

I love your country Sweden, nice people, friendly, I was there in 1964, in June when the days were the longest.

I went to the harness races, I won about $85.00, i picked those SB on conformation. Eva the Swedish girl i was staying with, said after I won that $, you already know who is going to win.

Good Luck on your story, Louis.

I´m writing a story, well two actually, but right now I´m only writing on one, about race horses, and I´m going to try to make it a script.
But, I know very little about racing, and would be grateful for eveything you can tell me.

It´s about a girl who trains her own horses, and in the end she rides one of the horses in a race where the winner gets a lot of money.

How much can a race horse cost?

How do you train a race horse? If you are not riding on a track, what do you do?

What is a good time for a horse in a race, and what is a bad time? How do you know a horse is ready for a race?

Where are there race tracks?

What kind of races and derby`s are there?

Are different races for a small trainer than a more successful trainer, or does it depend on how good the horse is?

Thank you.

What I know about horse racing could maybe fill a thimble, but I used to be a great fan of the game---and I also used to be a writer.

You're getting better advice here than I can give, too. But.

Watch horse racing. Some of it will sink in by osmosis. There's always YouTube.

If you can ride a horse of any sort, do it. Even just once. Maybe the sense of smell or touch isn't crucial to a screenplay but it is to a book or story.

If your story is set in the USA, I'll try to give you what assistance I can.

Good luck.

When I had horses, I had a rough half-mile track bulldozed out of a rectangular pasture. I laid out the turns with a lot of rope and posts. This was good for teaching young horses how to handle themselves in company on a track.

Similarly, when I worked on a Standardbred farm, we had a rough track around the outside perimeter of the largest pasture. It wasn't much good for speed work, but it was more than adequate for training and conditioning. Plus, these were pacers and trotters in harness, so slightly different dynamics on the turns.
