I'm in one of the above states.

I think how often a horse can run depends on the horse? Same with how much rest between races. Although a particular trainer's approach might be a factor.

I`m sure it depends on the horse and the trainer. But some people maybe think a horse shouldn´t race more than once a month or that it should be at least two weeks between races.
I´m not sure how important that is for my story, but...

Not as wild as it sounds. With my well broke TBs, when I'm galloping at the farm, the saddle only balances on their back. A person on the ground can get their whole closed fist under the girth. I only tighten the girth with young ones who aren't fully broke or with older horses when I'm riding in rough/broken terrain. I keep the girth loose so that it doesn't interfere with their breathing.

Sounds like a strategy for hitting the ground.

If you learn to ride bareback you understand that the saddle is attached to the rider not the horse. People who learn to ride with a saddle tend to think the saddle is attached to the horse.

Didn't a horse in the Derby this year have his saddle slip?

Are there any special words used in horseracing that I should know about?

Lots and lots.

For example, a "morning glory" is a horse who can flat outrun the wind in a morning workout, but can't pass a "fat man" in the afternoon (in a race). (It is the actual saying - no offense to our fluffier friends out there).

I haven`t checked this thread for a while, but would still appreciate if you could tell me some words or sayings I could have use for in my story/script.

I know you weigh in before a race, and you weigh out after a race, right? If there is a difference, you get disqualified? Something else happens? If there is only a small difference, if that happens?

Is the winner horse always tested for doping? Or they test random horses?

Dreamer,

You might want to check out the TVG.com website. They have a forum that is dedicated to newcomers, and should be quite a bit of help.
