Foster was purchased by Swigert for $595 at the 1868 Woodburn yearling sale and was sold to Capt. Moore before beginning his racing career. According to turf historian William Robertson, Foster appears to have been one of the 1st horses trained by the interval training method, used while he was being rehabilitated for the 1876 Pacific Jockey Club Purse. He had been at stud in Oregon from ages 5 to 8 with a brief attempt at a comeback as a 7yo that was cut short due to lameness.
