The unquestioned champion of the colony of MD in his day. In 1767, was sent to Philadelphia where he defeated 3 opponents in straight 4-mile heats under 140 pounds. He also won an unusual match race with *Dove during the French and Indian War, in which the race was staged on the public road to Baltimore; the horses were required to race 2 miles out of town, then turn and race back.
