Mannie Gray raced only as a three-year-old, in the colors of Gen. A. Buford. She ran eight times over courses in Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee. She was not a brilliant race mare, winning one six-furlong dash, was once second and twice third, and her stakes attempts were fruitless.
In 1880 she joined the broodmare band at Dixiana, where she died in 1896, having produced twelve foals including Domino. Thoroughbred Heritage says of her: "Mannie Gray has gone down in breeding history as one of the most influential American mares"
