| There has been much controversy as to which of the unnamed sisters to
Lyncenus was dam of Manto, owing to Manto's foaling not being recorded in
the General Stud Book, and to the consequent error of assuming that she was
her older sister, Jenny Sutton, foaled in 1817. It is clear that Jenny
Sutton lived until 1840 in England; it is also accepted on the authority of
Vol 2 of the Australian Stud Book that Manto was foaled in 1822, and
imported to Australia in `1825. Vol 3 of the Australian Stud Book is
probably right in saying, "she was foaled in 1822 by Soothsayer from sister
to Lynceus ( foaled in 1802, John of Paris' dam). This is confirmed by the
improbability of any other sister to Lyncenus having, in her old age, a
filly by Soothsayer without any previous record of progeny. It is further
rendered probable by the fact that the foalings of John of Paris' dam are
carried down to 1821 in Vol 2 of the General Stud Book, which was published
in December 1821. Vol 3 was not published till 1827, when it was not
unnatural that the last foal of the old mare, born exported and lost sight
of some years before should be missed.
These considerations, coupled with statements of pedigree in of files of
Sydney newspapers, searched by the compiler of the Australian Stud Book, may
be regarded as conclusive.
