| From The History of Thoroughbred Racing in America by Robertson:
"When Joesph Cairm Simpson, who was to found California's first all-
sports newspaper, Breeder and Sportsman, came west in the 1870s, he
brought with him several horses, including the filly Marian. In need
of capital for his newspaper, Simpson sold Marian to [Theodore]
Winters and the owner of the Pacific Coast's top stallion thus
accquired the West's greatest broodmare. An Illinois-bred daughter
of Malcolm, Marian produced a veritable galaxy of stars. Mated to
Norfolk, she foaled Emperoro of Norfolk, Duchess of Norfolk, Prince
of Norfolk, The Czar, El Rio Rey and Rey Del Rey. The Thoroughbred
of California computed that Marian's offspring won, all told, no
fewer than 71 stakes events."
Died before foaling 1893
