According to the late 19th/early 20th century turf historian Thomas B. "Hidalgo" Merry, Monarque may have been sired by either The Baron or Sting as well as by The Emperor; however, The Emperor is the generally accepted sire. Monarque was sold to the Comte de Lagrange in October of his four-year-old season. He broke down in the Great Metropolitan Handicap two days after winning the Newmarket Handicap and was retired to stud in his native France. He died at the age of 22 after proving a great stud success.
