Family 56 is a short-lived family which dies out in the 1780s
From a pedigree for a chesnut horse ... "got by King Herod, his dam was the dam of Mr Pigott's Shark, and got by Old Snap, out of Wagg's dam, which was got by a full brother to Babraham, her dam was a natural Barb mare, of the late Duke of Marlborough's stud" [Weatherbys 1790].
3rd dam of Shark (1771), which between 1774 and 1779 won 19 of 29 starts in England earning over 16,000 guineas, the largest amount ever won until that time; imported into America, he is an exceptionally successful sire, many of his mares breeding on; "Shark did as much to enhance the value of the bloodstock of the United States as any horse ever imported" - American Turf Register [1830]
