Foundation Mare American Family A14
Two certificates describe Shepherdess as a "high-bred and well-known Kentucky racer", without any pedigree being given.
The American Stud Book shows her dam by Traveller*, 2nd dam by Whittington*, but this should probably be the reverse, as Traveller* covered from 1751-62 and Whittington* covered 1760-65. Given this likely cross reversal error in the ASB there is no certainty that the extended pedigree is correct, and Webb's Shepherdess should therefore be considered the Foundation Mare of Family A14
The family remains extant and has produced many high class horses
3rd dam of Woodpecker, undefeated in 7 career starts and a very successful sire, both of broodmares which bred on producing high class horses, notably Falcon, the 3rd dam of the great Hanover (17 consecutive victories in first two years including 1887 Kentucky Derby, Leading Sire in North America 1895-1898); and through his at least as successful as himself stallion son Grey Eagle
